An ICE agent has been caught on camera bragging about how much he earns while threatening nearby protestors.

Tensions are well beyond breaking point across the United States at the moment, after the fatal shooting of protester Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis earlier this month and, more recently, the fatal ICE shooting of 37‑year‑old ICU nurse Alex Pretti in the same city.

The killing of Good, 37, an unarmed US citizen and mother, has sparked nationwide outrage at ICE’s tactics on behalf of Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Tensions have only intensified after the subsequent fatal shooting of 37‑year‑old Pretti by federal immigration agents during a protest in Minneapolis, fueling even larger demonstrations and public fury across the country.

Killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti casts further scrutiny on ICE tactics

While the White House has attempted to portray Good as a ‘domestic terrorist,’ justifying the deadly force used by ICE agent Ross after she was shot and killed during an immigration enforcement operation, protests against ICE and Trump’s government have intensified in the wake of the shootings.

The administration rushed to apply the same narrative to Pretti after federal Border Patrol agents fatally shot the 37‑year‑old in Minneapolis, branding him without evidence as a ‘domestic terrorist’ – a claim widely disputed by eyewitnesses, video evidence, and local officials, and which has sparked further outrage and larger demonstrations nationwide.

ICE’s actions have been under public scrutiny for much of Trump’s second term as president.

Multiple US citizens have been arrested by the agency, as well as children, some as young as five years of age.

Violent clashes with protestors have become a regular occurrence, with Good and Pretti’s death provoking renewed hostilities towards ICE in major cities across the US.

The vetting of ICE agents has been under the spotlight recently, with Ross’ shooting of Good being branded wreckless by several members of law enforcement.

Protestors have highlighted how agents regularly conduct themselves in a manner that shows zero accountability for their actions, no matter how violent or how little provocation is involved.

Undercover operation embarasses ICE and Homeland Security

Further to this, journalist Laura Jedeed, author of ‘Firewalled Media’ on Substack, went undercover to discover what went into ICE’s recruitment process for new agents.

Her revelations have poured more gasoline onto a fire that is already blazing across the country.

Jedeed, a prominent anti-Trump and anti-ICE journalist, documented in a shocking article on Slate how she was offered a role as an agent despite having no previous law enforcement experience (though she has served in the military).

The 38-year-old explained how the entire interview process only took six minutes, and she was offered a job as an agent without submitting or signing any paperwork.

Jedeed describes herself as being ‘extremely googlable,’ having written numerous articles strongly criticizing the Trump regime and ICE.

In addition to this embarrassment for ICE, which seemingly was willing to hire someone without properly vetting them, the Department of Homeland Security then fired back at Jedeed on X, formerly Twitter, claiming that her story was a ‘lazy lie.’

Jedeed responded with a post showing her ICE recruitment and hiring portal, in which she received a tentative offer, a final offer, and an onboarding date. The video shared by Jedeed also revealed a completed background investigation.

Is ICE suitable to serve and protect?

Jedeed’s bombshell article has hauled ICE’s recruitment strategy into the news cycle, especially in the wake of the shootings of Good and Pretti.

Are the people being recruited actually suitable to enforce law and order? Are the people in charge of hiring responsible and competent enough? Should such a seemingly lax recruitment process be in place for a role that provides successful applicants with firearms?

ICE has reported that 12,000 new agents were hired in 2025. The agency, which serves as Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the United States, has garnered countless headlines during both Trump administrations for its involvement in the detention and deportation of thousands of immigrants, some of whom have not even been in America illegally.

ICE was created in 2002 as part of the Homeland Security Act, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which left over 3,000 people dead. ICE’s mission is to conduct criminal investigations and enforce immigration laws pertaining to national security.

Under Trump’s presidency, ICE has been emboldened and its authority seemingly expanded, utilizing the backing of the White House to conduct raids on immigrant communities that have drawn scorn from millions of American citizens and Democratic politicians.

Trump ran his 2024 presidential election campaign on a platform of anti-immigration, repeatedly claiming that he would rid the United States of illegal immigrants and foreign criminals.

The White House has since deployed ICE onto the streets of Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Minneapolis, among other cities around the country, detaining immigrants and placing them into detention centers, where many of them are then deported from.

Given the severity of punishments facing those who are detained, who may be sent to countries they’ve never actually stepped foot in, the fact the recruitment process to hire those responsible for enforcing these measures is seemingly not particularly thorough is a worrying sign for many Americans, especially when it comes to public safety and national security.

ICE agents also being constantly adorned in masks has also caused the public to question their real motives as to why they feel the need to protect their identities if what they’re doing is legal and responsible?

ICE agent boasts about astronomical salary in viral video

In a recent video, an ICE agent becomes hostile with nearby protestors, telling off-camera passers by, ‘if you guys get in my way, we’ll arrest you,’ to which one passerby responds: “Sir, we’re just observing, please calm down.”

The witness then adds: “You got anger issues as a kid didn’t you? Were your parents present? You should be ashamed of yourself, man.”

The officer in the video appears to become frustrated with the situation, replying: “I love my job. I can’t believe I get paid for this. I would do it for free,” reports the Mirror US.

Another female witness identifies herself as a physician who had studied for seven years, to which the officer then boasts on camera: “I went to high school. I get $200k.”

ICE has aided its recruitment process by offering $50,000 bonuses for those who sign up to the agency successfully.

The officer in question boasted about his salary; however, received widespread condemnation, especially in the wake of Good and Pretti’s death, as well as the fact that Americans across the country are struggling through a cost-of-living crisis, with many having to use food shelters to feed themselves.

How much do ICE agents really earn?

According to the BBC, ICE recruits can expect to earn between $49,739 and $89,528 annually, depending on background and qualifications, which would cast into doubt the validity of the officer in question’s claim about his own earnings.

In addition to the salaries in this range, ICE agents can pocket $60,000 in student loan repayments as well as enjoying coverage under the Federal Employees Retirement System, health insurance, life and long-term care insurance and annual  $10,000 retention bonuses for up to three years of service.

The agent boasting about their ‘$200k’ salary is yet another controversy that brings ICE’s conduct into sharp focus. There is reportedly substantial inner turmoil within the agency and government following the killings of Good and Pretti.

Trump and the MAGA movement faces huge backlash over Good and Pretti shootings

With senior officials attempting to defend agent Ross by condemning Good, a mother who had just dropped off her six‑year‑old son, as a ‘domestic terrorist,’ backlash has intensified after federal agents also shot and killed Pretti, who was similarly labeled without evidence, fueling nationwide outrage.

US citizens being gunned down by ICE agents is not the sort of incident that fills other citizens with confidence about how the agents in the field handle high-pressure situations.

As the government attempts to continue its expansion of ICE, the White House will have to navigate sustained nationwide protests that are growing by the day.

Trump and his government will also want to avoid any further stories surrounding the lackadaisical approach to ICE’s recruitment process, as Jedeed laid bare in her Slate article.

Notable Democrats, including New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senate candidate Graham Platner, Congressional Candidate Cameron Kasky, and new Mayor of New York City Zohran Mamdani, have all called for ICE to be abolished, with immigration and ICE’s slew of high profile, violent controversies set to be at the forefront of midterm elections in November that are vital to both political parties.
