Donald Trump‘s former counter-terrorism chief, Joe Kent, has made an unprecedented claim about who killed Charlie Kirk last year, just days after resigning from the top role.

The American politician, 45, released a bombshell resignation letter earlier this week (March 17), leaving Americans truly baffled about the severity of the war in Iran.

The former US official urged the president to ‘reverse course’ in his departure note, claiming that Iran posed ‘no imminent threat’ to the US when they conducted airstrikes alongside Israel last month.

Kent also claimed the administration ‘started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.’

The White House completely dismissed his letter, stating that they had ‘compelling evidence’ that Iran was going to attack the US first.

Why did America start a war with Iran?

Many feel that Trump has bitten off more than he can chew with the war in Iran, named ‘Operation Epic Fury’ by the US, after striking the country on February 28.

The US and Israel’s mission was to rid the world of the former Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, which proved to be a success.

Trump later confirmed his death on social media.

The regime then appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, who also escaped death by ‘seconds’ according to reports.

He allegedly went out into the garden moments before missiles hit his home and killed his father.

Both America and Israel, along with their allies in recent years, decided that if Iran’s development of deadly missiles progressed any further, it could pose a serious security threat to the West.

But many of those under the Iranian regime have also called for reform.

Governments across the world have categorized the regime’s behaviour has highly authoritarian and strongly opposed to the Western way of life and beliefs.

When will the war end?

Heated remarks were voiced in the Oval Office earlier this week, as Trump insisted that America ‘don’t need any help’ from Nato in regards to the war.

However, the president added that they ‘should’ve been there.’

His most harsh criticism was directed at the UK, suggesting that Prime Minister Keir Starmer has harmed the relationship between the long-standing allies.

He added that the war was a ‘great test’ of the alliance’s relations with the US.

In terms of when the war will end, Trump is pressing that it’s still completely within his control.

Washington appears to have conducted the airstrikes on the assumption that military pressure from both the US and Israel would collapse the Iranian regime.

However, they have demonstrated a remarkable capacity to survive the crisis.

Counter-terrorism chief resigns abruptly

After Trump failed to retreat from Iran, Kent published his resignation letter on X, alleging that Israel ‘lied’ in order to convince the US to get involved in the operation.

Following his departure, Kent is now the most high-profile figure within the Trump administration to publicly criticise the attack on Iran.

His letter stated: “An echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States.

“This was a lie.”

Speaking of Kent in the Oval Office, the president noted that he was a ‘nice guy’ but ‘weak on security.’

“It was a good thing that he’s out,” he added.

Who really killed Charlie Kirk?

The day after his resignation, Kent appeared on The Tucker Carlson Show, where he discussed the ongoing war, as well as the assassination of Kirk – the founder of Turning Point USA – survived by his widow, Erika Kirk.

Following an investigation, authorities identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the gunman who shot Kirk dead on campus at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

However, Kent posed an alternative theory on the show.

He claimed that key lines of inquiry were never fully explored following the shooting.

Kent said: “Charlie Kirk was killed publicly in a very horrific way, and we’re not really even allowed to look into that at all.

“The investigation that I was a part of – the National Terrorism Center was a part of – we were stopped from continuing to investigate.”

Speaking about the gunman, he added: “We’ve been told that this individual – Robinson – is a lone gunman, and maybe he is.

“But there was still a lot for us to look into that I can’t really get into.”

However, a law enforcement source subsequently spoke out and denied Kent’s account, alleging he made repeated claims without evidence.
