A prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has spoken out, as the search for her begins again.

The toddler went missing in 2007, and the prime suspect, Christian Brueckner, is currently in prison serving time for other offenses.

Madeleine was aged just three when she went missing while on holiday with her family.

Her parents famously went out to dinner and left her sleeping in a room with her toddler twin siblings, and came home to find she had gone.

Brueckner r**ed a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz back in 2005, but is due to be released from prison later this year if he isn’t charged with anything else.

Police are working against the clock to charge him with anything connected to Madeleine, as he is set to be released in September.

Brueckner has denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

The criminal has given an interview to a German newspaper, speaking to journalist Ulrich Oppol.

The criminal told the reporter what he is most looking forward to when he leaves jail: he says he is excited about having a steak and a beer.

A new search for the missing child is underway, after German federal police requested new searches be carried out in an attempt to find new evidence against Brueckner.

They are currently examining an area of scrubland a few miles away from where she went missing.

According to Metro, investigators will bring in radar equipment to scan beneath the ground.

A well has also been drained, and teams are battling through thick vegetation.

They will also examine trenches which were dug near the resort at the time of the case, as well as searching in wells, ruins, a reservoir, and water tanks.

Brueckner spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017.

He was previously found to have photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir.

He refused to answer any questions about Madeleine.

Brueckner told the reporter that he will leave Germany for a country with no extradition treaty when he is released.

Brueckner also suggested he might have plastic surgery as he is so well known now.

He complained: “The fact that I have been in prison for many years for something that I cannot have committed and that therefore, through the participation of the media, half the world considers me a cruel r**ist.”

Brueckner was cleared by a German court in October last year of unrelated s**ual offenses.

McCann’s family marked the 18th year since her disappearance last month.

A statement from her parents Kate and Gerry McCann said: “The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to ‘leave no stone unturned’ is unwavering. We will do our utmost to achieve this.”
