Madeleine McCann’s parents have shared a deeply emotional update marking 19 years since their daughter disappeared.

The couple is offering a glimpse into the lasting pain and uncertainty they continue to endure as they approach nearly two decades without answers.

The night that changed everything

Madeleine was just three years old when she vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007. What began as a routine evening quickly turned into a global mystery that still remains unsolved.

On the night she disappeared, Madeleine had been left asleep alongside her younger twin siblings while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, dined at a nearby restaurant with friends. When Kate returned to check on the children, she discovered Madeleine was missing.

An urgent search was launched immediately, rapidly expanding into an international investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Over time, the case became one of the most widely reported missing persons cases in modern history.

Despite extensive efforts, Madeleine’s whereabouts remain unknown. Numerous leads and theories have been explored, but no conclusive evidence has been found to explain what happened to her.

A case that gripped the world

The disappearance drew intense global media attention and sparked widespread public interest. It also brought scrutiny, with questions raised about the early handling of the investigation, the role of the media, and the reliability of witness accounts.

Even amid controversy, the case has remained active. Authorities continue to follow up on potential leads, and the McCanns have worked tirelessly to keep their daughter’s story in the public eye through campaigns such as Find Madeleine.

At times, new information has reignited hope. One significant development came after a tip-off helped identify a key suspect.

Detective Constable Mark Draycott, who has worked on Operation Grange—the Metropolitan Police’s investigation into the case—recalled how a single voicemail proved pivotal.

“One of my jobs was to check the answer phone messages. On May 18th I checked the answer phone and there was a message,” he explained. “It was from a male by the sound of his voice, he spoke good English and he asked to speak to David Edgar (private investigator).

“He said he had information and he left a Greek mobile number. I then rang this Greek mobile number and spoke to a male I now know to be Helge Lars Busching. He referred to himself as Lars and he gave information in relation to the Madeleine McCann investigation.”

That information was shared with German and Portuguese authorities, helping to advance inquiries. However, despite such developments, definitive answers remain elusive.

Grief, faith, and life after loss

For Kate and Gerry McCann, the years since Madeleine’s disappearance have been marked by resilience, but also profound emotional challenges. Kate has spoken candidly about how the experience tested her faith and affected her personal life.

In her 2011 memoir Madeleine, she wrote: “There have been many times when I’ve felt God has deserted me or that He has let Madeleine down. I’ve occasionally doubted His existence altogether. And yes, I’ve been angry with Him…”

Over time, she described finding some sense of peace again, adding: “For now, though, at least, my anger towards God seems to have subsided. I believe in Him and I still feel His presence.”

She also revealed the impact on her relationship and mental wellbeing, writing: “The first [problem] was my inability to permit myself any pleasure, whether it be reading a book or making love to my husband. The second stemmed from the revulsion stirred up by my fear that Madeleine had suffered the worst fate we could imagine.”

Kate later returned to work as a doctor during the Covid-19 pandemic, a move that reportedly helped her cope with the trauma.

A friend said: “Kate’s back working as a doctor. She’s helping out at her local hospitals now and not doing any surgery work. She has thrown herself back into a full-time job to assist others in need. There’s such a demand for qualified medics during these unprecedented times.”

‘Living in limbo’: A family’s ongoing pain

While the world continues to follow Madeleine’s story, the reality for her family is deeply personal. Kate and Gerry have raised their twins, Amelie and Sean, who were just toddlers when their sister disappeared. Now older, they continue to stand alongside their parents.

Amelie has attended anniversary events to mark Madeleine’s disappearance, once saying: “It’s nice that everyone is here together but it’s a sad occasion,” before lighting a candle in her sister’s memory.

On the 17th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, Kate and Gerry shared a heartfelt message reflecting on their ongoing grief and gratitude for support.

“It’s 17 years since Madeleine was taken from us. It’s hard to even say that number without shaking our heads in disbelief,” they said.

“Whilst we are fortunate in many ways and able to live a relatively normal and enjoyable life now, the ‘living in limbo’ is still very unsettling. And the absence still aches.”

They also thanked those who continue to support them: “Your support continues to encourage us and bolsters our strength to keep going. We know the love and hope for Madeleine and the will to find her, even after so many years, remains, and we are truly thankful for that. Thank you again for remembering Madeleine and all missing children.”

As the case hits its 19th anniversary, the McCanns’ previous words remain a powerful reminder of the enduring pain of not knowing—and the determination to keep searching for answers.

A heartbreaking update

On the 19th anniversary of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, a vigil was held in Rothley attended by her family and local supporters, per GB News.

Kate and Gerry McCann, joined by their twins, gathered as prayers were said, while the Rev Rob Gladstone told attendees, per the Daily Star: “We gather today to pray for Madeleine and other missing children, to encourage one another and especially Gerry and Kate to keep up our hope and pray for a renewal of strength even after nineteen years.”

Supporters echoed messages such as ‘never give up,’ ‘don’t forget about me,’ and ‘still missing, still missed,’ with one local saying: “I really feel for the family. They still have no closure and peace after all these years.”

In a statement, the McCanns said: “We remain very grateful for all our support… For Madeleine, who we love and miss every day, we will never give up.”

They also reaffirmed: “19 years. The search goes on.. to find our Madeleine, to achieve some justice, to make the world that bit safer.”

The update notes the case remains open, with continued funding for Operation Grange, and references the family being ‘dragged through the courts’ by a woman falsely claiming to be Madeleine.

Overall, the McCanns highlight the enduring public support and the family’s unwavering commitment to finding answers.
