Marvel Fans Upset As Chadwick Boseman ‘Replaced’ As Black Panther In New Movie
Marvel fans have expressed their upset as Chadwick Boseman is set to be ‘replaced’ as Black Panther in a new movie.
Boseman was a fan favorite in the Marvel world, and many believed he should not be replaced after his death.
Now, six years on from his death, Marvel has just announced a new Black Panther.
David Jonsson will take over the iconic role in Black Panther 3, which is to be directed by Ryan Coogler.
Many fans have celebrated this news and described Jonsson as a great successor to Boseman.
Others are less pleased.
Marvel has pointed out that Jonsson will be playing the son of Boseman’s T’Challa rather than taking over the role.
This hasn’t stopped fans expressing their opinions.
The Black Panther films captured audiences’ hearts
Marvel Studios launched the Black Panther franchise in 2018 and introduced audiences to the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda.
The films follow the journey of T’Challa as he becomes king after his father’s death and accepts the responsibility of protecting his people.
T’Challa balances tradition with progress while facing powerful enemies who threaten Wakanda and the wider world.
The first film stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, and Winston Duke.
The sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, honours Boseman’s legacy following his death.
Letitia Wright takes a leading role as Shuri while returning cast members continue the story.
The sequel also introduces Tenoch Huerta as Namor, the ruler of the hidden underwater kingdom of Talokan.
Director Ryan Coogler earned widespread praise for blending superhero action with themes of family, identity, leadership, and culture.
Critics applauded the films for celebrating African heritage, showcasing a predominantly Black cast, and delivering emotional storytelling alongside spectacular action.
Black Panther became a global phenomenon upon release. It earned more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, making it one of Marvel’s highest-grossing films.
It also became the first superhero movie to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The film won three Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also achieved commercial success, earning more than $850 million worldwide.
Angela Bassett won a Golden Globe and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Queen Ramonda.
Together, the two films remain among Marvel’s most acclaimed and culturally significant productions.
The sad passing of Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman died on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer.
His family announced the news in a statement that revealed he had received a stage III diagnosis in 2016.
He continued working throughout treatment and filmed several major projects while undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy.
He had received praise for performances in 42, Get on Up, Marshall, Da 5 Bloods, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Fans, fellow actors, and filmmakers paid tribute to Boseman after his death, celebrating both his talent and his determination.
His Black Panther co-star Michael B. Jordan wrote: “Everything you’ve given the world … the legends and heroes that you’ve shown us we are … will live on forever.”
Another Marvel co-star, Chris Evans, said: “I’m absolutely devastated. This is beyond heartbreaking. Chadwick was special. A true original.”
Even former US President Barack Obama paid tribute and reminisced on meeting Boseman at the White House.
“You could tell right away that he was blessed. To be young, gifted, and Black; to use that power to give them heroes to look up to; to do it all while in pain – what a use of his years,” he said.
Marvel Studios chose not to recast T’Challa and instead dedicated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to his memory.
The sequel honoured Boseman’s legacy by exploring grief, loss, and resilience through the people and nation that his character helped define.
There’s a new Black Panther!
Marvel Studios made several huge announcements during its Comic-Con panel, including new details about Avengers: Doomsday.
It included appearances from stars such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.
However, one reveal stood above the rest.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige invited Black Panther director Ryan Coogler onto the stage to confirm that Black Panther III is officially moving forward.
The studio also announced a release date of 15 December 2028, positioning the film as one of the MCU’s biggest projects following Avengers: Secret Wars.
Coogler then unveiled the movie’s new Black Panther. The third film will introduce an adult version of T’Challa, also known as Toussaint, the son of T’Challa and Nakia.
Marvel first introduced the character at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The director also confirmed that British actor David Jonsson will take on the role.
Jonsson has earned praise for performances in projects including Rye Lane, Industry, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk.
Fans welcomed the announcement with a huge reaction inside the room as the actor joined Coogler on stage.
Speaking to Empire, Feige later revealed that Jonsson secured the role after a meeting with Coogler several months earlier.
According to Feige, the director immediately knew he had found the next Black Panther and began working towards bringing Jonsson into the franchise.
Not all fans are happy with the casting
There has been a mixed reaction from Marvel fans online.
Many are pleased to see Jonsson have his chance with the iconic role.
One said: “I’m excited for this, Jonsson is a phenomenal actor. Loved him in The Long Walk and Wasteman.”
Another added: “Great actor, I’m sure Chadwick is smiling down.”
Not everybody was as impressed by the casting announcement.
One fan wrote on Reddit: “I’m not feeling him at all. He’s really small and doesn’t give off warrior, King, or superhero.”
Someone else agreed, saying they were ‘massively disappointed’ in the casting.
Despite some fans not being happy, the majority are excited to see where Marvel takes the iconic character in the new film.
