Meghan Markle Slammed Over ‘Insensitive’ Video Near Tunnel Where Princess Diana Died
Meghan Markle is facing a backlash after posting a video branded ‘insensitive beyond belief’ near the tunnel where Princess Diana died.
The Duchess of Sussex took a solo trip France this weekend for Paris Fashion Week, but one clip from the short stay has landed her in some serious hot water.
Having made a star appearance for Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli’s debut for Balenciaga, Markle documented the visit on her Instagram.
But it was one specific clip, taken later on in the night from her chauffeur-driven car, that has sparked controversy.
In the video, presumably filmed by the Duchess herself, viewers can see the Pont Alexandre III bridge, as the vehicle continues on towards the Pont de l’Alma bridge.
The royal lifted her feet up onto the seat in front of her as she recorded the outside of her car, but little did she know that the journey was of such significance.
The mom-of-two was filming the parallel journey – separated by the flowing waters of the River Seine – that her husband’s mother, Princess Diana, had taken on her fateful final evening in August 1997.
In his 2023 memoir, ‘Spare,’ Prince Harry recalls driving through the same tunnel while at the 2007 Rugby World Cup semi-final when he was just 23.
He wrote: “The World Cup provided me with a driver, and on my first night in the City of Light I asked him if he knew the tunnel where my mother… I watched his eyes in the rear-view [mirror], growing large.”
He requested the driver go through the tunnel at 65mph.
“The exact speed Mummy’s car had supposedly been driving, according to police,” he added.
It’s possible that Markle had no idea where she was close to while filming the clip, especially given that it was nighttime.
Still, some users on X (formerly Twitter) have called her out.
One said: “Please tell me that’s not real..? She didn’t actually do that… did she..?”
Another added: “For most people whose husband’s mother died, passing the area where it happened would be a moment of quiet, respectful, contemplation.”
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams branded the move ‘utterly bewildering,’ and ‘insensitive beyond belief.’
But others online were quick to defend the duchess.
One noted: “Meghan can’t even blink without it being a problem.
“I bet Princess Diana would have loved her. She had to deal with the same BS from the media.”
“This is quite the stretch,” another claimed.
While a third said: “People are just reaching for ways they can hate Meghan Markle.
“Leave the woman alone.”
