Meghan Markle is said to have uttered a heartbreaking seven word statement to a friend shortly before she and Prince Harry packed up and left the UK.

The Duchess of Sussex had a turbulent time after joining the British Royal Family following her wedding with Harry.

Meghan and Harry first met through a mutual friend when they were set up for a blind date in London in July 2016, traveling to Botswana together not long afterwards, where Harry said their relationship truly began to blossom.

It wasn’t until October that year when reports started to emerge revealing the pair were dating, with the Sunday Express reporting: “The romance is in its early stages, but it’s no exaggeration to say he’s besotted with her.”

While the couple initially stayed quiet, Kensington Palace went on to release a statement in November 2016, confirming Harry and Meghan’s relationship, however the prince went on to criticise the media’s harassment of his new partner.

A difficult relationship with the media from day one

The statement addressed Harry’s complicated relationship with the media, having struggled with the intense interest in his personal life from a very young age, and going on to call out harassment Meghan and her family were facing after their relationship was shared.

“Some of this has been very public—the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and Web article comments,” it said.

“Some of it has been hidden from the public—the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriends; the bombardment of nearly every friend, coworker, and loved one in her life.”

Harry and Meghan step down as senior royals

In November 2017, Harry and Meghan announce their engagement after 15 months of dating, with Harry revealing he proposed during a quiet evening at home while roasting chicken.

In May 2018, the happy couple wed in a stunning ceremony at St George’s Chapel, which was viewed by millions of people all over the world. Meghan officially became the Duchess of Sussex after their wedding.

Almost exactly a year after their wedding, the couple welcomed their first child, Prince Archie of Sussex. Just months later, the couple publicly discussed the struggles they were facing with the media scrutiny and criticism over their every move.

In January 2020, they made the shock announcement they would be stepping down as senior royals, in a move which was cruelly referred to as Megxit by critics who blamed Meghan for encouraging the decision. Harry has always refuted this and insisted it was his decision, after the establishment failed to support his wife, who was facing a mental health crisis over the media intrusion.

Meghan’s heartbreaking seven word statement

The couple packed up their things and prepared to move to Canada, where they had decided to call home, before ultimately settling in California.

When bidding goodbye to staff and aides before leaving the UK, Meghan is said to have made an upsetting seven word statement to author Omid Scobie, who was one of few journalists invited to her final engagement at Buckingham Palace.

Scobie later wrote the book Finding Freedom, along with co-author Carolyn Durand, about Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as senior royals, where he revealed the Duchess of Sussex’s final tear-filled words.

“Staff who had been with the couple from day one were mourning the end of what was supposed to be a happy story: two people fall in love, get married, have a baby, serve the Queen, the end. Instead, they were leaving the country,” he penned in the book.

“As Meghan gave me a final hug goodbye, she said, ‘It didn’t have to be this way.'”

According to the author, Meghan was sad about the way things had gone for her and Harry in the UK, as they prepared to start their new life in Canada, before later moving to California.

Scobie later said in an article for Harper’s Bazaar that ‘tears that the Duchess had been bravely holding back [were] free to flow among familiar face,’ adding that ‘the Duchess of Sussex emotionally [bid] much-loved aides farewell, with her flight ‘home’ to Canada leaving in a matter of hours.’

Meghan is also reported to have told a pal through tears, ‘I gave up my entire life for this family,’ when she was blamed for the decision for her and Harry to step away from senior royal life, adding that she was ‘willing to do whatever it takes.’
