A mom has revealed the moment she made a horrifying discovery in the packaging of a Barbie doll she purchased for her daughter.

Jade Adams experienced every parents’ worst nightmare when discovered that the toy she had bought for her daughter had been tampered with in the worst possible way.

The mom had been shopping in discount store Cargo Largo in Independence, Missouri, US, with her husband and daughter on Saturday (March 21) when they decided to make the purchase.

However, what started as a regular shopping trip quickly turned to horror, after they made the grim discovery.

The family were driving home from the shop when the woman’s husband attempted to open the packaging of the Barbie doll using a knife, only to find himself covered in a mysterious white powder.

“When [her husband] opened it with a knife, it was like poof in the car. We were like, ‘what is that?!’” she told WDAF.

The family quickly turned around and headed back to the store to let them know what had happened and warned them to remove the dolls from the shelves in case any more had been contaminated.

The store then reported the incident to local police, who ran tests to determine what the mysterious substance was and how it ended up in the Barbie doll packaging.

Independence Police Department issued a statement later that day saying they had been contacted by employees just before 10.30am local time, with reports of a ‘suspicious powder substance’ in the packaging of a Barbie doll.

Substance of the white powder confirmed as drugs

After testing the substance, the police department released a further statement, confirming the family’s worst fears and revealing the substance had tested positive for cocaine and ‘trace amounts of fentanyl.’

Officers investigating the incident found that five units of the doll had been sold, and ‘fentanyl was discovered taped inside the back packaging of the dolls.’

Fortunately, all five dolls were tracked down and recovered with no injuries or illness reported as a result of the terrifying incident.

Police also confirmed they don’t believe tampered dolls were sent to any other retailers, however investigations remain ongoing.

A K-9 unit was sent to search the discount store and its warehouse, however no more substances were found.

The Independence Police Department has said the K-9 unit will perform regular checks across Cargo Largo’s buildings from now on.

Parents who discovered the powder horrified

Adams has since revealed her horror at discovering the content of the powder and how things could have been so much worse.

“They could have dusted that all over themselves, their house, wherever they opened it,” she said.

“Like, it’s not just me, it’s really just the kids for me. That’s my baby, that’s my last baby, that’s terrifying.”

Speaking to The Kansas City Star, Officer Bryan Conley said investigators believe the substance had been intentionally hidden inside the dolls’ packaging.

“Hiding narcotics in everyday items is a common tactic used by drug cartels to import their narcotics to America,” he said.

Adams took to Instagram to raise awareness of the incident and was met with praise for alerting the store so quickly and for sharing their experience with other parents so they can have more awareness going forward.

“Damn, now we have to have Narcan when we take our children to Toys’ R ‘ Us,” one wrote, adding: “Lord help us.”

Meanwhile, a second commented: “Thank God you found it and let them know!! I hope no children were hurt.”

A third added: “So glad you’re an aware and proactive parent, Jade!”

Unfortunately this isn’t the first time drugs have been found in items like Barbie dolls, as Officer Conley confirmed, drug dealers have been finding more and more creative ways to hide their narcotics.

Drugs found in all kinds of different items

In one incident, federal agents in Pharr, Texas, found nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana, worth around $285,000, hidden inside coconuts being transported by a tractor trailer travelling from Mexico.

The incident took place in May 2016, with US Customs and Border Patrol agents uncovering the drugs at the Pharr International Bridge.

Meanwhile, in Riverside, California, police discovered more than 1,000 ecstasy pills and 90 Xanax stuffed inside a puzzled box earlier the same year.

The pills were located inside a jigsaw puzzle box, which had been mailed over from, the Netherlands.

And, it appears nothing is sacred after a father was found to have hidden his drugs inside his three-year-old daughter’s Frozen themed purse during a traffic stop.

Police in Houston said they found marijuana and MDMA inside the purse, which is decorated with Annam Elsa and Olaf.
