New p*** laws that require adult content websites to implement verification checks begin today (July 25).

The law change is specifically to protect children and young people from viewing p***ography, or content which encourages self-harm, s**cide or eating disorders.

As of today, anyone watching s**ually explicit or harmful content online will have to provide ID prior to entering adult websites, with the aim of protecting vulnerable under-18 users.

New research found that among 8-14-year-olds in the U.K., eight percent had visited an online p****graphy site or app in a month, including around three percent of 8–9-year-olds, the youngest children who participated in the study.

It was also revealed that boys aged 13-14 were mostly likely to seek a p*** service.

The new restrictions are part of the Online Safety Act in the U.K., a bill brought in by the previous government to improve how these adult websites are regulated.

However, both the previous government, and the current government, believe that accessing adult content under the age of 18 has been made far too easy.

The bill was also introduced to better regulate the type of content we are exposed to online and on social media.

In a statement, technology secretary Peter Kyle said: “This government has taken one of the boldest steps anywhere in the world to reclaim the digital space for young people – to lay the foundations for a safer, healthier, more humane place online.

“We cannot – and will not – allow a generation of children to grow up at the mercy of toxic algorithms, pushed to see harmful content they would never be exposed to offline.

He added that those websites who do not follow new regulations will be ‘held to account.’

“I will not hesitate to go further and legislate to ensure that no child is left unprotected,” Kyle noted.

But the age of a user can be verified in a number of ways.

According to Ofcom, facial age estimation is one option.

This is where users can show their face via photo or video, and technology will analyse it to estimate your age.

Another is open banking, where users can give their permission for the age-check service to securely access information from your bank about whether you are over 18.

Photo ID matching is also a way to verify the age of a user, as well as credit-card age checks.

Other methods that have been put forward by Ofcom include email age verification, and mobile network age verification.

In regards to data being protected, the regulatory board have stated: “Strong age checks can be done effectively, safely, and in a way that protects your privacy.

“As with everything you do online, you should exercise a degree of caution and judgement when giving over personal information.”
