Police have revealed the identity of the suspect who killed two Jewish people in a car ramming and stabbing attack in Manchester, UK, just yesterday (October 2).

Police have declared the incident as a terrorist attack, after the suspect targeted a synagogue in Manchester on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, known as Yom Kippur.

The attacker was shot dead by armed police at the scene after noticing that the suspect had a bomb strapped to himself.

A controlled explosion was later carried out by a bomb disposal unit, indicating that the attack could have proved even more devastating had the attacker got access inside the building.

Worshippers and security staff demonstrated ‘immediate bravery’ and helped stop the attacker from entering the building by barricading themselves in, Greater Manchester Police said.

Two Jewish people were tragically killed at the scene, and three more remain in hospital with serious injuries.

The two victims named by police have been identified as Adrian Daulby, 53, and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.

Shah, a local resident who spoke to the BBC, said: “The man was just running out with a knife and he just started going on a bit of a rampage.

“It’s quite terrifying to be completely honest.”

Police declared ‘Plato’ moments after hearing about the incident – a set of responses by the emergency services to large-scale incidents, including ‘marauding terrorist attacks.’

They have now issued an update on the suspect, who has been identified as 35-year-old Jihad al Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, reported that the attacker came to the UK as a ‘small child’ and was naturalized as a British citizen while still a child in 2006.

She also noted that the individual was not known to the police already.

“For now, that is all we know of the attacker,” she added.

Greater Manchester Police say three other suspects have been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.

They are two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has just arrived at the scene of the attack in Manchester with his wife, Victoria, who is Jewish, to pay their respects.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis says the attack was the ‘tragic result’ of an ‘unrelenting wave of Jew hatred on our streets, campuses, on social media and elsewhere.’
