Overlooked evidence in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is now being taken ‘seriously’ after being resurfaced.

The disappearance of Madeleine made fresh headlines this week after the prime suspect, Christian Brückner, was released from prison.

The 48-year-old had completed his seven-year sentence for the r*** of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2005.

The German national, 48, has never been charged with any crime in relation to the McCann case, and denies any involvement, despite being the prime suspect.

Madeleine was just three when she vanished in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in 2007, and her disappearance has become one of the highest-profile unsolved missing person cases in the world.

Now, it’s been reported that new evidence was ‘overlooked’ in the days leading up to her disappearance, and is now being taken ‘seriously.’

Marc Verwilghen, Belgium’s former justice minister, says ‘disturbing intelligence’ passed between European forces days before Madeleine vanished in 2007 has long been ignored.

Just 72 hours prior to the kidnapping, Belgian police had flagged that a p****phile ring had ‘placed an order’ for a little girl.

The former cop fears McCann may have been abducted on the orders of the notorious p****phile gang, which was once tied to Belgian child-killer, Marc Dutroux.

And given that the former justice minister oversaw the Dutroux inquiry, police are taking the claim ‘seriously.’

Speaking to The Sun, Verwilghen said: “As soon as I heard about the case, I had déjà vu – because it reminded me straight away of Dutroux.

“When you look at the case it is of course possible Madeleine was stolen to order.”

Police have long argued that it was unlikely the three-year-old was snatched by a lone attacker.

A source close to the case said: “Police take seriously the claims that emerged from Belgium.

“They believe there is no way whoever took her could have been acting alone.

“But there is no interest in the network, which creates too many new agencies, and they want to keep their focus on the current suspect.”

Prime suspect Brückner has been fitted with an ankle tag following his release from prison.

Local police spokesman Lars Dehnert told the BBC: “We don’t have any knowledge about where Christian B is going to go.

“This is happening in co-operation with his lawyers.”

Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters also told the outlet that ‘the psychiatric expert assumes that due to his personality, there is a justified risk [that Brückner] will commit crimes again.’
