Prince William found himself at the center of a hostile atmosphere during a recent public appearance, after soccer fans aimed a horrific four-word chant in his direction.

The Prince of Wales has never hidden his passion for the Premier League side and has spoken openly over the years about why he chose to support Aston Villa rather than following one of England’s traditionally dominant teams.

Prince William’s lifelong love of Aston Villa

In an interview with the BBC, William explained his connection to Villa, saying: “Aston Villa has always had a great history. I have friends who support Villa, and one of the first FA Cup games I attended was Bolton vs. Aston Villa back in 2000.”

Since then, he has become a familiar face at Villa Park and away fixtures, regularly cheering the club on from the stands alongside thousands of other supporters.

His appearances have often been warmly received by Aston Villa fans, many of whom take pride in having the future king among their most famous supporters.

Whether attending Premier League matches or European nights, William has consistently demonstrated his enthusiasm for the club, celebrating goals and sharing in both the highs and lows with fellow fans.

However, what should have been another memorable Champions League evening instead became overshadowed by the behavior of a section of the visiting supporters.

Following reports of what unfolded inside Villa Park, many people rushed to social media to defend the prince, arguing that no fan should be subjected to personal abuse while attending a sporting event.

One person wrote: “No need for it, the guy loves soccer and needs respect. Should be allowed to watch in peace.”

Another commented: “That’s cruel. He’s a father whose wife has gone through treatment for cancer and his father is still going through treatment, plus being a parent to three children. Have some compassion.”

A third added: “The man was born into his life, the same way we all were, so it doesn’t justify hatred and insult, the same way we don’t like it…”

Previous clashes between Celtic supporters and the Royal Family

The latest incident unfolded as Aston Villa welcomed Scottish champions Celtic to Villa Park in Birmingham for a Champions League fixture.

As news spread that Prince William was watching from the stands, some Celtic supporters reportedly began directing chants toward the royal.

The confrontation is far from the first time sections of Celtic’s fanbase have expressed anti-monarchy views during high-profile matches.

Back in 2022, UEFA fined Celtic after supporters displayed banners criticizing the monarchy during a Champions League game that took place less than a week after Queen Elizabeth II died.

According to ESPN, fans displayed banners reading “F*** the crown,” alongside another saying “Sorry For Your Loss Michael Fagan.”

The latter referred to one of the most infamous royal security breaches in British history.

Michael Fagan became internationally known after breaking into Buckingham Palace in 1982 and entering Queen Elizabeth II’s bedroom while the monarch was asleep.

The incident happened only days after Prince William was born and remains one of the most remarkable breaches of royal security ever recorded.

Following the intrusion, Fagan was later diagnosed with schizophrenia by doctors.

UEFA’s control, ethics, and disciplinary body ultimately fined Celtic €15,000 over the banners, describing them as provocative.

Despite that punishment, controversy once again surrounded sections of the club’s traveling support during their visit to Birmingham.

Tensions rise inside Villa Park

As the Champions League atmosphere intensified, reports indicated that some visiting supporters continued displaying banners referencing Michael Fagan while also singing songs aimed at members of the Royal Family.

According to MailOnline, additional chants focused on both the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry throughout the evening.

Among the songs heard inside the stadium was ‘Lizzie’s in a box,’ a chant referencing William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022 after serving as Britain’s monarch for 70 years.

The scenes prompted a visible response from Aston Villa supporters, who rallied behind both their team and their famous fan.

Many home supporters reportedly waved Union Jack flags while singing the British national anthem in an apparent show of solidarity.

Although the atmosphere inside parts of the stadium became increasingly heated, the action on the field ultimately gave Villa supporters something to celebrate.

The home side secured an impressive 4-2 victory over Celtic, ensuring Prince William left Villa Park smiling despite the hostile reception he received from a section of the away crowd.

The four-word chant that sparked outrage

While there were several songs and banners directed toward the Royal Family throughout the evening, one chant in particular drew widespread attention online.

According to reports, Celtic supporters repeatedly shouted: “If you hate the royal family clap your hands.”

The four-word phrase at the center of the controversy was ‘hate the royal family.’

Following coverage of the incident, many people criticized the chanting as unnecessarily personal, arguing that Prince William should have been able to enjoy the match like any other supporter without becoming the target of abuse.

Others pointed out that disagreements over the monarchy should not spill over into personal attacks inside a soccer stadium, particularly given the difficult period William and his family have endured in recent years with both King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, undergoing cancer treatment.

Despite the unpleasant scenes, the Prince of Wales appeared focused on supporting Aston Villa throughout the evening, and the club’s entertaining 4-2 victory ultimately ensured it was the home supporters who had the final celebration.
