O’Connor was a junior-level decorated amateur boxer, winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017.

The 25-year-old signed on with promoter Ben Shalom’s Boxxer once she turned professional and remained undefeated in three fights.

Boxxer shared after the news of her passing was made public: “We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O’Connor. A true warrior inside and outside the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous, and determined young woman far too soon.

“Georgia was loved, respected, and admired by her friends here at Boxxer. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time.”

For two years, O’Connor from Durham, U.K., had been suffering from ‘unbearable’ cramps, bowel problems, and was having to use the toilet between 15 and 20 times a day.

This also affected her professional boxing as she felt constantly tired and weak while competing.

O’Connor was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis—a chronic inflammatory bowel disease and a chronic liver disease, as per the Mayo Clinic.

In January, the athlete announced she had been diagnosed with a ‘rare and aggressive’ form of cancer in October 2024 that was deemed ‘incurable’ by doctors.

The boxer wrote on Instagram: “For 17 weeks since the start of October, I’ve been in constant pain.

“I said from the start I felt it was cancer. I KNEW the risks. I have colitis and PSC, two diseases that dramatically increase the chances of getting it. I KNOW how high my risk is, and they do too. They always did.”

The athlete stated that ‘not one doctor’ took her seriously, claiming the hospital failed to run tests or investigate her pain. By the time she was diagnosed, the cancer had spread, and she also had blood clots in her lungs.

O’Connor chose to spread her journey with the disease publicly, she also told fans she’d suffered a miscarriage just before her diagnosis.

Heartbreakingly, weeks before she passed, O’Connor revealed she’d married her longtime boyfriend Adriano Cardinali on May 9.

As she put it in the caption, “I married the love of my life.”

In a previous post, she wrote about Cardinali’s support: “From the moment I was diagnosed with cancer, Adriano didn’t hesitate.

“He quit his job without a second thought and made it his mission to fight this battle alongside me. Not just by my side, but leading the charge, doing everything in his power to save me.”
