A shark expert has shared what the teenagers who jumped off a cruise ship’s final moments may have been like.

Cameron Robbins, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tragically disappeared on May 24, 2023.

During a celebratory trip with friends, the teen jumped off Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise ship near Athol Island in the Bahamas at around 9:30 p.m.

Horrifying video footage captured the moments following Robbins’s plunge. The 18-year-old was seen swimming in the dark waters while onlookers urged him to grab a buoy thrown toward him.

In the background of the footage, one passenger can be heard shouting: “Oh my f*****g god. Oh, shut the f**k up. Oh bye… bye… Oh… s**t!”

Some people noticed shadowy movement in the water near Robbins, sparking speculation about a possible shark encounter.

The area where Robbins jumped overboard is home to tiger and bull sharks, which are classed as more aggressive shark species.

Royal Bahamas Defence Force Commodore Raymond King called the waters ‘really shark-infested.’

Shark expert Kevin McMurray has offered insights into the possible circumstances surrounding Robbins’ disappearance.

He states to the Mirror: “Either he sank or a shark ate his body, that’s possible. There are a lot of tiger sharks there, and they’ll scavenge.”

McMurray, founder of trackingsharks.com, examined footage capturing Robbins’s last moments.

He noted that Robbins appeared to notice something in the water—potentially a shark—leading him to swim away from it.

The expert says: “So a lot of people are actually saying he was attacked by a shark right where you see all the splashes, but I think that’s just him kicking, and I think he’s getting away from it.”

McMurray also notes: “I’m surprised that he wasn’t yelling or doing anything like that, that’s one of the shocking things that you would think somebody that was overboard that wanted to get up would do.”

His expert analysis of the video is that following: “What I think happened is, he got in the water and he was swimming around, the shark, for some reason, or whatever it is – I’m not for sure saying it is a shark, but it looks a lot like a shark – essentially it comes and surfaces and there’s a life ring out to his right.

“So he’s looking at whatever popped up out of the water, and instead of swimming toward the life ring, he turns around at that point. I think all that splashing we see is just him trying to get away from whatever it is.”

McMurray also notes that if a shark attack did occur, perhaps a single bite, which he claims is more than likely, he believes Robbins would have died from exposure.

He states that sharks may have been attracted to the boat’s flashing lights, sounds, and vibrations.

The shark expert says: “Either he sank or a shark ate his body, that’s possible. There are a lot of tiger sharks there, and they’ll scavenge.”

If Robbins was eaten by a shark, there would have likely been remains McMurray claims.

However, he continues, “Recovering it would be nearly impossible. Something like that, you’re talking about a massive search area with currents and all that.”
