The UK counter-terrorism police have made a bombshell announcement about ‘ISIS bride’ Shamima Begum.

The 26-year-old is currently living in a detention camp in Syria after she left her home in London at the age of 15 to join the Islamic State in 2015.

Following her decision to join the terrorist group, Begum had her UK citizenship revoked by the conservative government.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously critized the former government’s decision to revoke her citizenship, but later changed his stance, claiming that national security must come first.

But a new revelation made by the UK counter-terrorism police could change everything.

Who is Shamima Begum?

Just 10 days after she left the UK, Begum married an Islamic State fighter and went on to have three children, none of whom survived.

Ten years on from leaving the UK, she remains in the al-Roj detention camp in northern Syria.

Begum has pursued numerous legal challenges to the decision of the UK to revoke her citizenship, but her efforts have been unsuccessful.

She most recently lost her final UK court bid in August 2024.

What does Shamima Begum look like now?

Begum has given multiple interviews following her move out of the UK, and people online have noted just how different she looks.

During an interview with the Daily Express, her face was concealed by a surgical mask.

However, reporters noted that ‘her eyes were somewhat sunken, and she seemed pale, as well as very thin.’

What announcement did the counter-terrorism police make?

After a three-year review, the Independent Commission on UK Counter Terrorism concluded that Begum and other Britons held in Syrian camps should be brought back.

The report states: “The government should facilitate the voluntary repatriation for British nationals, including those deprived of British nationality.

“It should appoint a special envoy to oversee repatriation and inform returnees of the likelihood of prosecution.”

It continues: “As escapes from camps are likely to lead to some returns to the UK, an organised programme of return, rehabilitation and integration is the best long-term option for managing risk.”

The report states that allowing UK-linked individuals to stay in Syrian facilities was ‘inconsistent’ with the country’s human rights obligations.

After living in the Syrian camp, Begum has stated that she regrets her actions as a 15-year-old.

Speaking to the BBC in 2022, she said: “I take responsibility.

“I’m ashamed of myself for being so stupid, for falling for something like this.

“Just a lot of regret.”
