Brits Spend Over $11 Billion Each Year Making Home Smell Nice – And Are Happy To Dump Smelly Partners
Brits are reportedly spending over $11 billion (£9 million) each year making their home smell nice – and more than half say they’d break up with their partner if their house stunk.
Baylis & Harding, a British bath, body, and gift company, quizzed the nation on their favorite smells to mark Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit being crowned its inaugural home scent of the year.
In celebration of the Discover Your Signature Fragrance campaign launch, 79% of 2,000 people surveyed shared that they are inspired by other people’s nice smelling homes.
It also found that 89% of people feel more confident inviting people over when their home smells pleasant.
Three quarters of Brits take note of the smell of the hand wash they use, with baked bread (19%), freshly cut grass (15%), and fresh coffee (14%) being the most popular of the quirky aromas that Brits are open to trying.

The survey found that each month, British households spend an average of $33 (£25) a month on home fragrances, including hand wash, which equates to a staggering $11.7 billion a year.
Citrus proved a popular scent, with 32% favoring zesty scents, while household aromas such as fresh laundry (35%), lavender (30%), and coffee (23%) also proved a hit.
At the end opposite end of the scale, cigarette smoke (48%), body odor (46%), and rotten food ((43%) topped the least-liked fragrances list.
Our sense of smell plays an important part in our romantic lives too – over half of Brits (52%) said they’d end a relationship if their partner had a stinky home.
The survey also found that a third (31%) would avoid going someone’s house if it smelled unpleasant.
Cleanliness (56%) is listed as the number one feeling most associated with home scents, followed by comfort (51%), and calmness (49%).

Scent expert Suzy Nightingale revealed that a great aroma has to power to boost your mood and energize you.
She said: “Our smell is a hidden superpower that we can tap into whenever we need, selecting hand wash aromas to enhance our mood and help us feel better every single day.
“Our choice of scent, whether that’s as a hand wash or perfume, also indicates something about who we are.
“Those who choose Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit as their favourite fragrance are confident people who welcome a lively home – perhaps enjoying entertaining guests regularly.”
Tania Slater, co-founder of Baylis & Harding, said: “We’ve always known the power of scent, whether its bursts of citrus or floral fragrances.
“We’re thrilled to spotlight Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit as our first ever Home Scent of the Year.
“It’s a smell that perfectly captures the refreshing and uplifting experience people want in their homes.
“Part of our Signature collection, Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit has been a customer favorite since launch, so we’re under no illusion how important nice scents are to people.”
