Detectives investigating the Madeleine McCann case reportedly found bone fragments and samples of clothing at the search site near Praia da Luz, Portugal, last week.

The British toddler vanished from a holiday apartment on May 3, 2007, and her disappearance has since become one of the most high-profile missing person cases.

Almost two decades on, police are still investigating the case, with a fresh search wrapping up last Thursday.

A team of German and Portuguese investigators conducted a three-day operation along a 120-acre stretch of land in their latest attempt to find evidence against prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who has vehemently denied the allegations.

Initial reports suggested the search failed to turn up any new leads; however, it’s now been claimed that bones and clothing fragments were uncovered at the scene, and will now be undergoing testing.

The search, which is the first since 2023, involved the crew looking through scrubland and abandoned structures.

A source told Berlin Morning Post: “Several objects have apparently been discovered, which are now being examined in more detail by the police in the laboratory.

“As Portuguese media report, clothing debris and bones were found, among other things.

“The investigators have not officially commented on whether the finds could have anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance, but that is clearly their hope.”

CNN Portugal also reported: “During the search, several items were seized that will be examined further by the German police.”

However, sources close to the investigation tell the Daily Mail that ‘only animal bones and bits of old adult clothing’ have been found in the operation.

An officer reportedly told the news outlet: “We always knew it was going to be a waste of time, but we have to show cooperation.

“What did they expect to find after 18 years? We were happy to work with them, but we knew it would be a waste of time.”

The latest reports on the search come as Brueckner, who is currently imprisoned in Germany for r**ing an elderly woman in Portugal in 2005, draws closer to his prison release.

Brueckner is due for release in September and has already vowed to leave Germany.

The prime suspect in the McCann case recently gave an interview to a German newspaper in which he spoke of leaving prison.

He told journalist Ulrich Oppold that he is looking forward to having a steak and beer after being released.

He refused to answer any questions regarding Madeleine after discussions with his lawyer.

Brueckner also told the journalist that if he does get out of prison, he will leave Germany for a country with no extradition treaty and lie low, as he is so well known.
