Madeleine McCann‘s parents have issued a ‘breakthrough’ update nearly 18 years after she vanished.

McCann was just three years old when she disappeared while on a family vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

She had traveled from the United Kingdom with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, her two-year-old twin siblings, and a group of close family friends.

On the night of May 3, Madeleine and her siblings were left sleeping in their family’s ground-floor vacation apartment at around 8:30 p.m. while their parents ate dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant roughly 55 meters away.

The adults took turns checking on the children every 30 to 40 minutes. At around 10 p.m., Kate discovered her daughter was gone.

The disappearance triggered massive international investigations and relentless media coverage.

The Daily Telegraph once described the case as ‘the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history.’

Prime suspect released from prison

In 2020, German prosecutors announced they believed they had ‘concrete evidence’ that a German national, Christian Brückner, was responsible for Madeline’s death.

He is a convicted s** offender with prior convictions for child s**ual abuse and drug trafficking.

Brückner, who has recently been released from prison for unrelated crimes, has repeatedly denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

Between 2019 and 2025, he served a prison sentence in Germany for the 2005 r*** of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal’s Algarve region.

Brückner was believed to be living in a borrowed VW camper van in the Algarve at the time Madeleine vanished.

Authorities in Braunschweig ordered a formal investigation into his possible involvement.

The German Federal Criminal Police Office issued a public appeal for information on the long-running TV crime show Aktenzeichen XY… ungelöst, broadcast on ZDF.

Police said they received useful information as early in 2013 when the case was first featured on the program, but it took years to develop evidence they believe could support a prosecution.

Prosecutors asked the public for help identifying a phone number that contacted Brückner on the day Madeleine disappeared.

Records allegedly show a 30-minute connection between the two numbers that day.

A British woman who was dating Brückner at the time alleged to investigators that the night before Madeleine vanished, he said to her: “I have a job to do in Praia da Luz tomorrow. It’s a horrible job but it’s something I have to do and it will change my life.

“You won’t be seeing me for a while.”

Brückner’s Jaguar XJR6 was re-registered to a new owner the day after Madeleine disappeared.

Hans Christian Wolters of the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office said proceedings were being pursued on the assumption that Madeleine is dead, due to Brückner’s criminal history, per the BBC.

In July 2020, German police searched an allotment in Hanover linked to the investigation, as reported by The Guardian.

From May 23 to May 25, 2023, Portuguese, German, and British police searched a stretch of land more than a mile long near the Arade Dam, close to the city of Silves, around 31 miles from Praia da Luz.

A child’s sock had previously been found in the area in 2008.

Authorities said cell phone location data placed Brückner near Madeleine within minutes of her disappearance.

Between June 3 and June 5, 2025, German police, with approval from Portuguese authorities, searched scrubland and abandoned buildings between Praia da Luz and a cottage where Brückner once lived.

In a separate disturbing chapter of the case, a woman was recently convicted after falsely claiming she was the missing Madeleine.

Julia Wandelt, now 24, repeatedly contacted the McCann family for years through WhatsApp and Instagram.

She also appeared at their home and posted a letter through their door beginning, ‘Dear Mum.’

Wandelt claimed she believed she was the missing child and spent more than two years attempting to gather evidence to support that belief.

DNA testing later confirmed she is not Madeleine McCann.

In November 2025, Wandelt was found guilty of harassing the McCann family but cleared of stalking charges.

Her co-defendant, Karen Spragg, 61, described by prosecutors as a conspiracy theorist, was found not guilty.
