A full list of US draft exemptions has been issued after the White House provided a major update regarding military operations in Iran.

Recent concerns about a potential draft have emerged in the wake of America’s bombing campaign in Iran.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also recently refused to rule out that Americans could be enrolled in the military as part of the war effort.

Draft fears escalate amid war in Iran

America’s recent missile attacks on Iran, that they have launched in partnership with Israel, have drastically increased global tensions.

Many people believe World War Three is now inevitable, with several other Middle Eastern countries already being drawn into the conflict.

Israel has launched attacks in Lebanon, while Iran has sent drones into neighboring countries in retaliatory attacks.

As the US continues its bombardment of Iran, following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, there is a growing fear that the situation in the Middle East could escalate further.

US President Donald Trump has, on multiple occasions, claimed the military operation in Iran will be completed within a matter of weeks. However, the refusal to rule out a boots-on-the-ground escalation has meant the draft has made its way back into headlines in recent days.

The initial strikes from American and Israeli missiles into Iran were claimed to be as part of a mission to bring about regime change in the country. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had ruled as the country’s Supreme Leader for over 30 years, overseeing a repressive regime.

However, with Khamenei killed during the first day of attacks, the constant bombardment of Iran has brought about other questions as to why America and Israel are attacking the country and risking further deadly implications around the globe.

World War Three fears higher than ever

As more countries in the Middle East are drawn into the conflict with Iran, there is a growing risk of the situation intensifying.

According to Richard Shirreff, the former deputy supreme allied commander of NATO in Europe, he ‘cannot remember a more perilous moment in geopolitics in his lifetime.’ He added that a ‘growing sense in the Western military community’ suggests the crisis has ‘already spiralled out of control.’

Shirreff states that if the US became entangled in a Middle Eastern ground conflict involving deployed troops, China and Russia would ‘waste no time’ taking advantage of the situation. In his view, Beijing could ‘seize the opportunity’ to pursue its ‘longed-for invasion of Taiwan, perhaps as soon as 2027.’

With Russia still entrenched in its illegal invasion of Ukraine and China raising tensions with Taiwan over a possible invasion, several theatres of conflict could coincide with the war in Iran, triggering a full-scale world war in the near future.

Mark Rutte, the Nato secretary general, also said the West ‘must be prepared for the scale of war our grandparents and great-grandparents endured’, during a speech in Berlin, in December.

Who could be drafted?

In December, an amended version of the National Defense Authorization Act was passed, incorporating automatic registration with the Selective Service for certain Americans.

“Under existing legislation, all male US citizens and male immigrants between 18 and 25 must register with the Selective Service System, a database utilised to monitor those who might be summoned to serve in the US Army should a draft be reintroduced,” per the Mirror.

The recent amendment would allow the US government to automatically enrol eligible males into the army rather than them self-registering.

However, the US has not utilized mandatory conscription since 1973. Any attempt to return to that system would need to be passed by Congress as well as needing Trump’s signature.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about the fears of families across the US regarding a draft during a recent appearance on Fox.

Leavitt said in response to a question from host Maria Bartiromo, ‘President Trump wisely does not remove options off of the table.’

She stated: “The president, as commander in chief, wants to continue to assess the success of this military operation.

“As commander in chief, there’s no greater priority or responsibility to this president than, of course, protecting the American people and protecting our troops and our bases in the Middle East, which Iran has been threatening for 47 years.”

Leavitt did note that a draft was ‘not part of the current plan,’ however.

Most men between the ages of 18-25 are required to register. Not registering could result in up to five years imprisonment and fines of up to $250,000.

Who would be exempt from the draft?

There are certain people who would receive an exemption should a military draft become a reality for the first time in over 50 years.

There are:

  • Non-immigrant men in the US on student, tourist, visitor, or diplomatic visas
  • Men serving on active duty
  • Cadets or midshipmen at US service academies
  • Certain military colleges are not required to register

Despite there being an expectation that they would be exempt, members of the clergy and students training for the ministry must also register. At the time of writing, registration is only mandatory for men.
