It seems that the world may be about to witness something very special indeed because it has been confirmed that Nicolas Cage is set to star in an eight-part scripted TV series as Joe Exotic.
Cast your mind back to only a few months ago and no one had ever really heard of Joe Exotic, the Tiger King. Although we’re in the midst of a global pandemic, we found ourselves intrigued by the mullet-sporting, gun-shooting, ex-zoo owner and now prisoner and he has become one of the most talked-about people in the world.
So much so that ever since Netflix true-crime documentary Tiger King made Joe a household name, people have been desperate for the story of Joe Exotic to continue and names have been flying around for weeks as to who could potentially play him in a fictionalised story of his life.
Well, it seems that the world may be about to witness something very special indeed because Variety has confirmed that Nicolas Cage is set to star in an eight-part scripted TV series as Joe Exotic, and it’s safe to say the internet has reacted to the news exactly as you would have expected.
If you have seen Nicolas Cage play big daddy in Kick-Ass then you know he was born for the role of Joe Exotic.

I’m hoping Nicolas Cage approaches the role of Joe Exotic the same way he approached his role in Vampire’s Kiss. With a little bit of Cameron Poe from Con Air thrown in. Obvs. I can’t think of anyone more perfect for the role. #FullCage

According to Variety, the eight-part series will be brought to us by Dan Lagana, the showrunner of American Vandal, another popular Netflix show and will be based on the Texas Monthly article ‘Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild’.
What a title.
The show will supposedly chart the personal story of Joe Schreibvogel, an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma, fighting to keep his park even at the risk of losing his sanity, as he becomes Joe Exotic. It really does sound like the perfect story and the perfect role for Nicolas Cage, doesn’t it? The series will also mark Cages first-ever TV role, which is quite remarkable given his lengthy career and he will also be serving as a producer on the project.
Currently, there’s no release date for the series.
Unsurprisingly, given the success of Tiger King, this series isn’t the only Joe Exotic project that is in the works. A few weeks ago it was announced that SNL regular Kate McKinnon is set to star in the role of Exotic’s nemesis and big cat “sanctuary” owner Carole Baskin, in another series based on the podcast Joe Exotic. As of yet though, no one has been cast to star opposite McKinnon.
The Netflix original documentary Tiger King has become nothing short of a phenomenon, with a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as recording over 34 million unique viewers in its first 10 days of release in the US, becoming one of the most successful true-crime documentaries of all time.
