A North Korean official has weighed in on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to Daily NK, a high-ranking officer in the country has apparently said that the crisis may not have happened if Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, hadn’t ‘abandoned its nuclear arsenal’.
He reportedly said that North Korea will use this crisis to justify its own use of a nuclear weapon, saying: “Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, more and more party cadres in North Korea say Pyongyang can never abandon its nuclear weapons.

“North Korea is apparently growing more attached to its nuclear arsenal since the crisis in Ukraine. The consensus among high-ranking North Korean cadres is that the Ukraine crisis began when Kyiv abandoned its nuclear arsenal.
“It’s believed North Korea will use Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to bolster their reasoning for refusing to denuclearise.”
NK News has also reported that North Korea will use the crisis to justify its own ‘refusal to denuclearise’.
A former South Korean ambassador, named Lee Yang-goo, told the publication: “North Korea already did not have much willingness to denuclearise.
“But looking at the graphic scenes coming out of Ukraine, Pyongyang will further solidify their internal and external justification for possessing nuclear weapons.’
“Now, after this crisis, it will be difficult for any country to make a denuclearisation pitch to North Korea. North Koreans think that nuclear weapons are the absolute saviour of the country.”

It comes as the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called Russia’s bombing of one of the country’s maternity hospitals a ‘genocide’.
The 44-year-old said via telegram: “Europeans, you can’t say you didn’t see what is happening. You have to tighten the sanctions until Russia can’t continue their savage war.
“What kind of country bombs hospitals? Is afraid of hospitals? Of a maternity ward? Was someone insulting Russians?”
