Olympic runner Agnes Tirop has tragically been found ‘stabbed to death at her home’ in Iten, Kenya, according to reports.

The 25-year-old long-distance runner finished in fourth place at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

According to the BBC, Tom Makori, who is head of police in the area, said the athlete’s husband is a ‘preliminary suspect’ in the investigation.

He said: “When [police] got in the house, they found Tirop on the bed and there was a pool of blood on the floor.

“They saw she had been stabbed in the neck, which led us to believe it was a knife wound, and we believe that is what caused her death.

“Her husband is still at large, and preliminary investigations tell us her husband is a suspect because he cannot be found.

“Police are trying to find her husband so he can explain what happened to Tirop.”

They allegedly added there was CCTV at the property which could help them with their investigation.

According to reports, Tirop’s father contacted police on Tuesday evening when he couldn’t reach his daughter, who just last month set the world record for a 10-kilometre race in Germany.

The runner also took home bronze medals at the World Athletic Championships in 2017 and 2019.

The Kenyan athletic body released a statement in response to the Olympian’s ‘untimely’ death.

They said: “Athletics Kenya are distraught to learn about the untimely death of World 10,000m bronze medallist Agnes Tirop.”

The sports brand Adidas also tweeted about the news, writing: “The Adidas family is deeply saddened by the tragic news about Agnes Jebet Tirop.

“Agnes was an incredible person, a record-breaking athlete and a beloved member of our family. She will be greatly missed by us all and her legacy will forever live on in our memory.”
