Oprah Winfrey has insisted that she had no idea that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview would be a ‘bombshell’.
The 68-year-old appeared on CBS with Gayle King and discussed the tell-all chat she had with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last year.
Reflecting on the interview, Winfrey said: “I was as surprised by the bombshell as everybody else.

“I was doing an interview to offer them a platform to tell their story about why they left, and that was my number one intention was just clarity on ‘Why did you leave?’.
“And so some of the things that were revealed in that interview came as a surprise to me and those surprises are now referred to as ‘bombshell’.

“But I didn’t set out to do a ‘bombshell’ interview. I set out to do an interview, have a conversation that would allow them to tell their story.”
King responded: “And now people say, ‘reconciliation, reconciliation, we hope the brothers reconcile’, what do you say?”
Winfrey hit back: “I do not get into people’s family matters.
“Everybody who has experienced some challenges in their families with in-laws or brothers or sisters knows how difficult some of those situations can be and I’m sure that you know for the royal family, it’s no different.”
She added: “And nobody comes to talk to me about their family business so I try and stay out of people’s family business!”
Winfrey and King’s discussion then came to an end and back to the studio – where King was presenting live – it was said: “And after that Oprah goes, ‘and Gayle that is the end of that interview!’.”
In 2021, Markle and Prince Harry were interviewed by Winfrey and discussed their exit from the royal family.

The Duchess claimed there were ‘concerns’ over the colour of Archie’s skin prior to his birth and that Prince Charles, now King, stopped taking her husband’s calls.
At one point, Winfrey asked: “There’s a conversation with you about how dark your baby is going to be?”
Markle replied: “Potentially and what that would mean and look like.”
