A mum and dad from Arizona, US, decided to give their son’s bed, widescreen television and trainers away after he stole their Range Rover when they weren’t at home.
Knowing that his parents were away on holiday in Las Vegas, 14-year-old Angel Martinez decided to take advantage of the opportunity and drive their Range Rover car through the neighbourhood at a reckless speed.
According to the Metro, local residents were left terrified by the incident as they feared for their children’s safety.
Angel told Fox6 that he had decided to take the car after he had washed it so that it would dry quicker.
He said: “I just wanted to drive but I don’t have my license so I just took it.
“I can wash the car, and I was like I don’t have anything to dry it, so I’m gonna take it for one spin until it dries.”
Angel’s dad Ramon Martinez was informed of the incident by the police who reported to him what his son had been up to in his absence.
Apparently, Angel had already been in trouble with his parents for another reason. As this escalated their anger, they decided to punish their son in an unusual way so he would learn a valuable lesson.
Ramon said: “Today, his room is 100 per cent empty, and we’re giving all his stuff away.
Alongside a sign that read ‘Sorry I stole my parent’s car and was speeding’, Angel was forced to sit outside amongst his belongings in their driveway.
Ramon explained that the punishment was a way in which Angel could apologise for misbehaving to their neighbours – as someone easily could have been run over.
Angel told the news outlet that he understood he deserved the punishment, although he was sad to give up his most prized possessions.
He commented: “It’s kind of weird, but I think it’s a fair punishment.”
