People are just finding out why women’s underwear typically has a bow on the front.

Although underwear is worn daily, it’s probably something you’ve not given much thought to.

But you’ve probably noticed that panties usually have a bow on them – and it’s not just a pretty feature.

There’s actually a hidden meaning behind the detail and now you’ll be in the know.

People are sharing their surprise after learning the meaning behind the tiny bow.

“Holy s***, you just blew my mind,” comments one person.

Another adds: “I always wondered what that damn bow was there for.”

“That was kind of a cool piece of information,” admits a third.

Somebody else writes: “I just thought it was a girly design!”

While a fifth person says: “Never knew that.”

Many people discovered the reason behind the bow when one Redditor decided to find out once and for all.

They asked: “Why do so many panties have that little bow on the center front?”

The post quickly went viral, with many coming forward with theories.

One person responded: “Now? Because it’s cute, it’s feminine, it evokes innocence, and it makes it really easy to tell which side is the front when dressing hastily in the dark.

“As for the roots of the tradition? It comes from pre-elastic days when your underthings were held in place by a bit of ribbon threaded through the eyelet lace at the tops.

“The little bow is where you tied that ribbon, and of course, it’s in the front because that’s the easiest place to do something like that.”

Backing up this, another replied: “Originally the idea came from pre-elastic days when you had to tie it.

“Same for ballet flats. Ballet shoes that dancers wear a tie in the front so ballet flats mimic that sometimes.”

Many people took to the comments and agreed the bow is practical when dressing in the dark – and it’s a valid point as before electricity, many women would have dressed in the dark or by candlelight.

Eva’s Intimates says the bow’s origin can be traced back to 16th century France, where it was used as a decorative detail on clothing and accessories.

But its popularity truly soared during the Victorian era as it was used to decorate pieces like corsets and chemises.

To this day, the ribbon remains a common feature on women’s underwear—while some panties are made seamfree, others have taken the bow and elevated it to a higher level, replacing it with a diamante.

You really do learn something every day!
