Peppa Pig has introduced its first-ever same-sex couple since its debut in 2004.

Penny Polar Bear and her two mums appeared on the popular children’s TV show on September 5.

In the episode, Peppa’s friend says: “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy.

“One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”

Parents are now taking to Twitter and praising the move, with one tweeting: “I’m glad as some kids, including mine, have same-sex parents and watching shows like this will make them feel less out of place if they currently do.

“They have straight couples so why not same-sex? Makes sense. Anyone and I know loads will moan, [they] are just typical Karens.”

A second agreed, writing: “Wow so many people triggered by this. So what? The reality of life is there are a lot of same-sex couples raising healthy and happy children.

“Imagine indoctrinating your own child into hating gay couples because you won’t let them watch Peppa Pig.”

“Typical bigot comments. So you’re OK with kids seeing TALKING ANIMALS that do not really exist, but you freak out that one pair is a gay couple and that gays really exist and many kids have two moms or dads,” a third commented.

Penny Polar Bear’s debut comes after fellow kids’ show Thomas & Friends introduced its first-ever autistic character.

Nine-year-old autistic actor Elliott Garcia, from Reading, will voice Bruno the Brake Car following his casting, which involved the help of the National Autistic Society.
