Piers Morgan has slammed the BRITs for removing the male and female categories as ‘woke garbage’.

Responding to a tweet announcing the decision, Morgan wrote: “What a load of woke garbage. Won’t be long before it’s illegal to call yourself a man or woman.”

He then added: “It’s time for gender-neutral Olympics.”

The official announcement read: “New for BRITs 2022: Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year – celebrating artists solely for their music, The BRITs have committed to making the show more inclusive.

“Four new fan-voted genre awards – Alternative/Rock act, Pop/R&B act, Hip Hop/Grime/Rap act and Dance act – this year fans have more power than ever as we bring back the vote, while The BRITs shines a light across a diverse range of genres.”

Morgan wasn’t the only one to criticise the move. Some fans have vowed to boycott the ceremony.

One commented: “Absolutely ridiculous. It is starting to feel like a crime to say male or female and we are being bullied into this woke nonsense.

“I’m all for people being who they want to be but that doesn’t mean everyone should be like that. I am a female woman and proud of it, thank you.”

Another added: “Why don’t they have a gender-neutral award for those in that category instead of removing male and female.”

However, someone else questioned why it mattered, writing: “What impact does gender have on making music, is there any difference for any gender? If not then why have separate categories?”

In a further shakeup, host Jack Whitehall, who has presented the ceremony for the last four years, has been replaced by stand-up comedian Mo Gilligan.

Maya Jama and Clara Amfo will also take on presenting duties over on the red carpet.
