Piers Morgan says that Mr Potato Head ‘going gender-neutral’ is ‘spineless and depressing’.

His comments come after Hasbro announced that the toy, which has been around for 70 years, is having a modern makeover to become more inclusive and will now just be called ‘Potato Head’.

Taking to Instagram, Morgan ranted: “FFS. Imagine doing this in the middle of a global pandemic because you’re terrified of offending a few wokies. So spineless and depressing.”

Explaining the decision behind the name change, Hasbro said in a statement: “Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially dropping the Mr from the Mr Potato Head brand name and logo to promote gender equality and inclusion.

“In the fall, the new Potato Family Pack ‘Create Your Potato Head Family’ will celebrate the many faces of families allowing kids to imagine and create their own Potato Head family.

“The name change will come with a fresh branding look with a whimsical colour palette and more inclusive messaging along with new product to appeal to the modern consumer.

“The possibilities to create your own families are endless with mixing and mashing all the parts and pieces”

Hasbro Senior Vice President Kimberly Boyd said that the toy, alongside others, was in need of a revamp when speaking of the change to Fast Company.

“Culture has evolved. Kids want to be able to represent their own experiences,” she explained. “The way the brand currently exists – with the Mr and Mrs – is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure.”

However, a tweet has been shared on the company’s official Twitter page, which says that the toy will still be keeping its titles.

The post says: “Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere!

“While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the MR. I yam proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD.”
