Piers Morgan has said the viral photo of Tom Daley knitting at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is proof that ‘nobody cares’ about the games.

The TV presenter, who quit Good Morning Britain over controversial comments he made about Meghan Markle, argued that the 27-year-old would be paying attention if they were actually interesting to watch.

On Twitter, the 56-year-old penned: “People attacked me for saying nobody cares about these Olympics (for reasons beyond control of the athletes).”

He added: “Here is Tom Daley doing his knitting during the women’s 3m diving final.

“I rest my case.”

However, not everybody agreed with his comments.

“If you followed my knitting alt, you’d know that knitting is actually a brilliant stress reliever,” one Twitter user wrote. “Clearly Daley is actually beside himself with excitement for the diving final and is doing some knitting to calm his nerves!”

Another added: “For someone who claims nobody cares about the Olympics, you do mention it an awful lot.”

“Tom Daley: ‘The one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching’.” a third quoted.

Daley recently opened up about his love for knitting and revealed it has helped keep him ‘sane’.

On Instagram, he said: “I don’t normally post things that are not necessarily knitting related on my ‘Made With Love’ page, but myself and Matty, my synchro partner, won the Olympics yesterday.

“I thought I would come on here to just say the one thing that has kept me sane through this whole process is my love for knitting and crocheting and stitching.”
