Pirates of the Caribbean star Tomayo Perry has been killed in a horror shark attack.
Perry, 49, was one of the buccaneers in the fifth film of the hit Disney franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. He played roles in Hawaii Five-0, Blue Crush, and Charlie’s Angels sequel Full Throttle.
The actor was also a lifeguard and surfed professionally.
Tragically, it has now been confirmed that Perry has died under devastating circumstances.
Tributes are pouring in for the 49-year-old, with one reading: “My deepest condolences to his family and many friends.”
Another says: “So sad. He was a sweetheart.”
A third person pens: “He was special. What a tragic loss.”
“RIP Tamayo Perry,” somebody else comments. “A kind individual lost far too soon. Much love to his family and friends.”
Rick Blangiardi, mayor of Honolulu, described the surfer’s death as a ‘tragic loss.’
Perry was born in O’ahu, an island in Hawaii, and began surfing at 12. He was seen as a future star in the surfing scene.
According to the Encyclopedia of Surfing: “Perry was known in his late teenage years as the quiet up-and-coming local boy who had to borrow surfboards because he had no sponsors.
“By 1997, the wiry goofy-footer had gone a long way to developing a tube riding style combining traits from Gerry Lopez and Tom Carroll, his two favorite old-school Pipeline surfers.”
Perry won the prestigious Pipeline Master trials in 1999 and would sporadically compete in events for the rest of his life, per MailOnline.
At the time of his passing, the devout Christian had been working as a lifeguard and a surfing instructor at O’ahu Surfing Experience.
Tragic details have now emerged regarding Perry’s death.
Honolulu’s emergency services say the lifeguard and surfing instructor was attacked on Goat Island on Sunday afternoon.
A caller reported in the incident, saying they had seen a man suffering from what appeared to be shark bites.
Shayne Enright, of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, said rescuers brought Perry to shore by jet ski, and paramedics assisted with the death pronouncement, according to AP News.
Stab magazine reports the actor was found on the island with an arm and a leg missing.
It is understood that Perry was surfing during a break from his job as a lifeguard when the tragedy occurred, per MailOnline.
Ocean Safety personnel have posted shark warnings in the area following the attack, Enright said.
It is unclear what breed of shark was responsible for the attack.
Sharks make up a disproportionate amount of news media attention, with just 69 unprovoked shark attacks occurring in 2023, according to the International Shark Attack File curated by the Florida Museum of Natural History.
The shark attack report states that 42% of incidents involved surfers and those participating in board sports.
