Cecilia Gentili, who played Miss Orlando in Pose, has sadly died aged 52.
The Argentine native was a transgender advocate and actress who spent most of her life fighting for the rights of undocumented immigrants, s** workers, and LGBTQIA+ people.
Gentili reportedly held positions at the LGBTQ HIV/AIDS care nonprofits GMHC and APICHA, as well as co-founding a free clinic for s** workers at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center.
She also co-founded DecrimNY – an organisation which decriminalises s** work in New York.
The actress published a memoir titled ‘Faltas: Letters to Everyone in My Hometown Who Isn’t My R**ist’ in 2022 – which went on to win the American Library Association’s 2023 Stonewall Book Award.
Fans have been left devastated after hearing that Gentili had passed away on Tuesday.

The sad news was shared on the Pose star’s Instagram page and reads: “Our beloved Cecilia Gentili passed away this morning to continue watching over us in spirit.
“Please be gentle with each other and love one another with ferocity.”
It was added that the star’s fans would hear ‘more updates about services and what is to come in the following days’.
“At this time, we’re asking for privacy, time, and space to grieve,” the statement concludes.

Shortly after the statement was released, the LGBTQIA+ advocacy group GLAAD also took to social media and praised Gentili for her commitment and service to the trans community.
The organisation said: “We are devastated to hear about the death of Cecilia Gentili.
“Cecilia was a pillar in the trans community, a dedicated advocate, a striking actress on the hit TV program Pose, an incredible journalist, and a s** worker.”
It was shared that Gentili had ‘just celebrated her 52nd birthday, surrounded by friends, loved ones, and community’.
After hearing the heartbreaking news, fans of Gentili have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) and paid tribute.

“We will never forget how you fought for all of us Cecilia Gentili,” one person pens.
Another says: “Rest in Peace, Power, and Paradise to a LEGEND, ICON, PIONEER throughout our communities, Cecilia Gentili!
“Y’all may remember her from her role as Miss Orlando on FX’s Pose. To me, Cecilia will be remembered as an Author, Humanitarian, Mother to many, [and] Sister to many more.”
While a third writes: “Cecilia Gentili was a living legend. A titan, an unapologetic example of trans joy and power. Her spirit lives on in all whom she touched and all she built for us.
“Rest powerfully and peacefully, Mami. And go kiki with the ancestors. You deserve eternal pleasure.”
At the time of writing, Cecilia Gentili’s cause of death has not been disclosed.
While the star’s official memorial service has yet to be announced, many of her fans reportedly came together at a church in New York City on Wednesday night to pay their respects.
