“Prince George singing the words to ‘Sweet Caroline’ might be the most British thing I’ve ever seen,” a third commented.

A fourth said: “Prince George singing ‘Sweet Caroline’. [The] best thing you’ll see today. Beyond cute.”

Others took to Twitter and shared their thoughts on Stewart’s cover of the popular song, with some dubbing it a ‘serious crime’.

“Neil Diamond should sue Rod Stewart for murdering ‘Sweet Caroline’ and Duran Duran should sue themselves,” a viewer remarked.

“Hello, is that the police? I’d like to report a serious crime,” a second joked. “Rod Stewart has just murdered ‘Sweet Caroline’ at Buckingham Palace.”

When performing to the crowd, Stewart actually said that the BBC ‘made’ him sing the cover.

He told the audience of 22,000: “The BBC made me sing this one.”

In a recent interview on BBC Breakfast with Naga Munchetty, the 77-year-old also opened up about the importance of The Queen.

He said: “I’ve grown up with this woman. I was seven when she came to the throne.

“So, she’s always been part of my life, and the fact that I’ve met her on seven occasions makes it even more important for me.”

Munchetty then asked: “What does she mean to you? You’ve met her on a few occasions, that must have been amazing.”

Appearing emotional, Stewart responded: “She’s been so much part of my life, she’s almost like a sister.

“She’s always been in the background of my life.”
