Conversion therapy is a controversial practice that attempts to change a person’s sexuality or gender.

People have been celebrating the move on social media.

Stonewall charity wrote: “We welcome the commitment to a legal ban but there can be no more delays. The abuse of LGBTQIA+ people will continue while the UK Government consults with those who seek to do us harm. Either you protect us or you don’t. #BanConversionTherapy #QueensSpeech.”

Mermaids charity added: “It has been confirmed in the #QueensSpeech that so called #ConversionTherapy will be banned. This abuse must end. No more delays. No more consultations. #BanConversionTherapy.”

Liz Truss, Minister for Women and Equalities, said: “As a global leader on LGBT+ rights, this government has always been committed to stamping out the practice of conversion therapy.

“We want to make sure that people in this country are protected, and these proposals mean nobody will be subjected to coercive and abhorrent conversion therapy.

“Alongside this legislation, we will make new funding available to ensure that victims have better access to the support they need.”
