An iconic Marvel actor has tragically died. 

Ray Stevenson, 58, was best known for starring in a string of action and fantasy films, including the Thor movies, Punisher: War Zone and the upcoming Star Wars: Ahsoka series – in which he plays villain Baylan Skoll.

He also did voice work in Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars, as Gar Saxon.

Sadly, it has been confirmed that Stevenson passed away just days before his 59th birthday.

The RRR actor reportedly died on Sunday in Italy.

Italian newspaper Republica reports that the 58-year-old was feeling unwell and was sent to the hospital days before his death.

At the time of writing, no cause of death has been revealed.

It’s said Stevenson was working on the film Cassino in Ischia – he was set to play a disgraced actor struggling to revive his career, while also dealing with the consequences of his leaving his family for stardom.

Many of the actor’s fans have taken to Twitter and paid tribute.

One fan pens: “Shocking and deeply saddened with news of Ray Stevenson passing away. Rest In Peace Dear Scott, you’ll be remembered forever.”

Another adds: “Very sad to wake up to the news that Ray Stevenson has died.

“Been in loads of things, but – to me – he’ll always be affable brute Titus Pullo in Rome. He was brilliant in that.”

While a third person writes: “So sad to hear the news that Ray Stevenson, our Pullo in Rome, has passed away.

“A brilliant, gutsy, larger-than-life actor who filled every part he played right up to the brim. My thoughts are with his family, his lovely wife Betta and their beautiful kids. What a loss.”

Marvel has also released a statement on the social media platform.

It reads: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ray Stevenson, who brought humour and wit to the character of Volstagg.

“He was a wonderful actor who will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Stevenson was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, on May 25, 1964. He was the second of three sons to a Royal Air Force pilot and his wife.

At eight years old, he and his family moved to England.

Stevenson enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and graduated aged 29.

He went on to make guest appearances in numerous TV shows and movies – until finally, he made his big debut in 1998’s The Theory of Flight, which also stars Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter.

Later on in his career, Stevenson would join the Star Wars family and voice Gar Sazon in The Clone Wars series.

He is set to play Baylan Skoll in the upcoming series Star Wars: Ashoka – which will debut in August.

Stevenson is survived by his partner, Elisabetta Caraccia and their children Sebastiano, 15 and Leonardo, 12.
