Richard Madeley faced a backlash from Good Morning Britain viewers today after his ‘cringe’ interview with England goalscorer Chloe Kelly.
Kelly, who bagged England’s winning goal against Germany in the Euro 2022 final on Sunday, was subjected to ‘patronising’ nicknames and comments throughout the interview, according to irked social media users.
After Madeley finished the interview by calling the sportswoman ‘Coco,’ one user wrote: “Richard Madeley wrapping up his interview with Chloe Kelly by calling her ‘Coco,’ because that’s what I call MY daughter Chloe,’ is exactly the sort of high-level awkward cringe I can’t cope with today.”

Another said: “Richard Madeley, you don’t interview someone then end by calling them your daughters nickname… Show Chloe Kelly some respect, she’s more than earned it.”
A third chimed in, writing: “I have to say, I cannot imagine a young male player who’d just scored the winning goal for England in a final going on TV and being told ‘Colin – or ‘Col-Col,’ as I call my son Colin – Col-Col, thank you very much indeed for coming in.’”
Elsewhere in the interview, Madeley told Kelly that last week she’d have been unrecognisable, despite being lauded as one of Manchester City’s finest players in the rapidly growing Women’s Super League.
“Not Richard Madeley interviewing Chloe Kelly and telling her that just last week she could walk into any supermarket and not be recognised,” one wrote.
They added: “She’s a Man City, Champions League striker. Cannot eye roll enough at this clown.”
Another commented: “@GMB not sure Richard Madeley should have said to @Chloe_Kelly98 that she would walk down the street with only her friends knowing her before the final.
“There are huge amounts of @BarclaysWSL football fans who have known who Chloe is for years.”
One person was tired of Madeley’s presenting and interviewing technique, writing: “Richard Madeley needs an intervention.”
