Ricky Gervais, who blasted the Oscar’s $100,000 gift bags, has shared a savage Jada Pinkett joke he would have apparently used at the Academy Awards if he had been hosting.
The comedian, who has made his feelings clear about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the event over a joke about his wife’s shaved hairdo, was reportedly testing material at a show in Highgate, north London, when he made the comment.
According to the Mirror, he said: “I’ll get it out of the way. I have not got any Will Smith material. I trended when that happened and I was not even there.
Find out why Ricky Gervais faced a backlash when hosting the Golden Globes below…
“What has it got to do with me? People were going ‘What would have happened if Ricky Gervais had been doing it (hosting Oscars)?’
“Well, nothing as I would not have made a joke about his wife’s hair. I would have made a joke about her boyfriend.”
Gervais was referring to when Pinkett Smith made headlines back in 2020 when August Alsina claimed he had been in some form of a relationship with the star.
Not long after, the actress acknowledged that there had been an ‘entanglement’.
Before testing the material, Gervais took to Twitter and retweeted a joke from The Office that references alopecia.
In the clip, the character he played said: ” “Particularly for his wife. And she’s got alopecia. So… not a happy home life.”
Over in the comments section, one commented: “So Will Smith was totally cool with @rickygervais calling all of Hollywood p****s but felt assault was the proper response to a bald joke.”
Another added: “I wonder how many comedians (who have struggled to make a living in #lockdown) are now feeling fair game at a live show. Do me a favour, if you’re easily offended, just stay out of comedy clubs.”
