He told the publication that his child was playing football when he turned ‘blue’ and fell ‘unconscious’.
Stewart recalled: “We thought my boy had a heart attack.
“He was going blue and was unconscious until he calmed down.
“It was scary, but it turned out to be a panic attack.”
The singer explained his son ‘wanted to do well…for his dad.’
He added: “Another boy fell backwards and banged his head – he’s still not back.
“In all of my days watching football, that’s the only time two ambulances had been called.”
The symptoms of both a panic attack and a heart attack can be frightening, and there are a number of similarities which make it difficult to distinguish between the two.
Panic attacks are triggered when a person’s stress hormones are high.
This can result in the body taking to ‘fight or flight’ mode, which results in chest pains, a racing heart and shortness of breath.
A heart attack is caused by a blockage in a coronary artery, which can lead to similar effects.
The NHS website says symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, shortness of breath and coughing or wheezing.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways that you can distinguish between the two.
The Patient website says that there are a number of symptoms that are unique to a heart attack.
This includes a feeling of tingling or numbness, pain in one or both arms or shoulders, and pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck or back.
Heart attacks are also triggered by some form of physical strain or exertion.
While panic attacks can appear to come out of the blue and particular emotional stress could be the trigger. However, this might not be obvious to onlookers.
To differentiate between the two, it can also help to take a person’s age and general health into account.
For example, many studies have found that people aged over 40 are more likely to have a heart attack, with males being more at risk than females.
So, it’s less likely that a young person who follows a healthy lifestyle – with no history of cardiovascular illness – will be experiencing a heart attack.
