Viewers have been left ‘in tears’ by a Christmas TV ad for Posten, Norway’s national postal service, as Santa gets a boyfriend.

The company released its festive advert, When Harry Met Santa, to celebrate 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the country.

Monica Solberg, the firm’s marketing director, told LGBTQ Nation: “Posten is an inclusive workplace with great diversity, and we would like to celebrate the 50th anniversary with this fine love story.

“As always, the main goal of the campaign is to show that Norway Post never stops renewing itself.

“In addition to showing the flexibility of our services, we want to put it in a socially relevant setting, with themes that are important for the society around us and for us at Norway Post.

“There will certainly be some negative reactions from some environments, but we are prepared to deal with that.

“The right to love whoever you want is a fundamental human right, and is not considered a political issue in free democratic societies in 2021.

“Norway Post has connected people for 375 years, and will continue to do so regardless of orientation or gender identity.”

Reaction to the advert on Twitter was positive, with one person writing: “It’s OK, I didn’t want to be in floods of tears or anything.”

“The ending made me tear up a little,” added another.

A third said: “Everybody deserves romance at Christmas. Everybody deserves to be loved as they are all year long.”

The short film features the story of Harry who waits around 364 days a year to spend one night with Father Christmas.

It begins with him catching Santa disappearing up his chimney. The next year, Mr. Claus waits around to tell him he is snoring.

Their relationship carries on developing until Harry eventually writes Santa a letter saying: “All I want for Christmas is you.” The pair then engage in a romantic kissing session.

It concludes: “In 2022, Norway marks 50 years of being able to love whoever we want.”
