Scarlett Johansson has claimed she was ‘groomed’ into being a ‘bombshell’ early in her career.

Johansson, 38, is best known for her portrayal of Natasha Romanoff in a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

In both 2018 and 2019, she was the highest-paid actress on the planet and was named in Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2021.

However, Johansson believes that she was manipulated into ‘certain roles’ at the beginning of her career.

She started out with roles in films like Ghost World (2001) and Match Point (2005), which she believes lent themselves to her being easily ‘objectified’.

Talking to iHeartRadio’s Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, the Black Widow actress said: “I kind of became, like, an ingénue.

“Young girls like that are really objectified, and that’s just a fact, so I think whatever box they’re put into, it sort of sets you on this trajectory for how your life will go.

“Now, obviously women really are able more now to choose their own path.”

On finding her feet in the industry and the subsequent fame that came with it, Johansson said she was typecast in ‘bombshell’ roles at a very young age, while she was still exploring her own ‘desirability and s**xuality’.

She explained: “I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring, and by that point, I was 18, 19, and I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and s**uality.

“I was kind of being groomed in a way to be this, what you call this ‘bombshell’ type of actor.

“I was playing the other woman and this object of desire and, you know, I suddenly found myself cornered in this place, like, I couldn’t get out of it.”

Johansson went on to say that such roles ‘burn bright and quick’, and that few opportunities arise beyond them.

She credits her agent, Bryan Lourd, with helping to break her out of that ‘bombshell’ trajectory: “He’s such a gentleman and he really loves movies and he loves actors and he loves real work, real great work and art and performance.

“He thrives on putting together great creatives and making opportunities for people to do compelling work. And he just got it.

“It would be easy to sit across from someone in that situation and go, ‘This is working’.

“It was an interesting, weird conundrum to be in but it really came back to working at it and trying to carve a place in different projects and work in great ensembles.”

Jojo Rabbit star Johansson also discussed motherhood, and how that has changed her views on her career.

She believes people should choose their work based on what satisfies them over anything else, including money.

The 38-year-old said: “I think that’s an important lesson to teach girls and boys – to pursue work that is satisfying.”
