International Football Star ‘In Serious Condition In Hospital’

Sergio Rico is currently in critical condition after being involved in a horse riding accident.

An international footballer is currently ‘in serious condition in hospital’. 

Sergio Rico, 29, is a goalkeeper who plays for the French champions Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

He has had previous spells at Mallorca, Fulham and Sevilla – where he won the UEFA Europa League twice.

Rico has also earnt one cap for Spain.

Sadly, it has been reported that the sportsman has been hospitalised in a ‘serious condition’ after getting involved in an accident.

The PSG goalkeeper is in intensive care following a horseriding incident on May 28.

It has been reported by local media that Rico fell off a horse while riding in the El Rocio region of Huelva in Spain.

Reportedly, he was also on the receiving end of several kicks from the horse while he was on the ground.

Rico had returned to Spain after his team – which won a record 11th Ligue 1 on May 27 – had granted the players some time off.

As per The Mirror, the star’s family has released a statement on his condition.

It reads: “We want to inform you that Sergio Rico travelled last night from Strasbourg to Malaga and from there to El Rocio with the permission of his club after PSG won Ligue 1.

“After a little over an hour and a half with his family and friends, he was heading to High Mass by the hermitage at El Rocio when he suffered an accident because of a cart with mules and a runaway horse that struck him.

“Sergio is in good hands, fighting to get better while he receives the best care from the medical team at Virgin del Rocio Hospital. We must act with precaution, especially in the next 48 hours.

“We are awaiting the results of his medical evolution which we hope will be favourable so we are able to tell you about his improvement as soon as possible.”

The statement ends by thanking everyone for their support during this time.

Spanish radio reporter Victor Fernandez has claimed that a ‘horse-drawn cart’ caused his horse to be distressed.

He reports, via The Mirror: “Around 8.30am Sergio suffered an accident when he was on a horse in the village of El Rocio.

“A horsedrawn cart crossed in front of him, the animal he was on became nervous and threw Sergio off.

“He has suffered a brain haemorrhage because it kicked him in the head.”

Thoughts and prayers have been sent from all over the football world.

At the Ligue 1 awards, teammate Nuno Mendes said: “I wanted to talk about Sergio Rico, who is going through difficult times at the moment. We are all with him, the whole team is very concerned.

“We hope it will go well and that he will be back with us very soon.”

Another one of his teammates, Kylian Mbappé, added that the whole club is behind Rico.

Meanwhile, Sevilla football club tweeted: “Lots of strength and a speedy recovery.”
