The Pogues frontman’s cause of death has been confirmed by his wife.
Shane MacGowan was an English-born Irish musician who was best known for being the lead vocalist of the Celtic punk band.
They had numerous hits, including ‘Dirty Old Town’ and ‘The Irish Rover’.
But undoubtedly, MacGowan is best known for the classic Christmas song ‘Fairytale of New York’, featuring the late Kirsty MacColl.
Last week, the songwriter’s fans were left heartbroken when it was announced he had passed away following a series of health problems.
MacGowan’s cause of death has reportedly been confirmed by his devastated wife, Victoria Mary Clarke.

MacGowan died from pneumonia in hospital, as per The New York Times.
In a family statement announcing the artist’s passing, his wife said: “I don’t know how to say this so I am just going to say it.
“Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life and the most beautiful soul and beautiful angel and the sun and the moon and the start and end of everything that I hold dear has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese.”

Clarke continued: “I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures.
“There’s no way to describe the loss that I am feeling and the longing for just one more of his smiles that lit up my world. Thank you thank you thank you thank you for your presence in this world you made it so very bright and you gave so much joy to so many people with your heart and soul and your music.
“You will live in my heart forever. Rave on in the garden all wet with rain that you loved so much. You meant the world to me.”
MacGowan died following a health battle with viral encephalitis, reports The Standard.
The ‘Love You ‘Till the End’ singer was in intensive care for the past few months battling the condition, which he had reportedly been diagnosed with last year.
Viral encephalitis is an ‘uncommon but serious condition in which the brain becomes inflamed’, as per the NHS.
It can be caused due to numerous factors, including bacterial infections, issues with your immune system and infections spreading to the brain.

MacGowan’s wife had often updated the songwriter’s fans on his health and in one of her posts, she had opened up about her ‘terrifying fears of loss’.
Sharing a snap of herself kissing the singer as he lay in his hospital bed, Clarke said: “Love is the most beautiful and powerful thing that we can experience as humans but love can also feel painful especially if you are afraid of losing a person or anything else that you love.”
She added that people need to ‘acknowledge and appreciate and accept’ all parts of love, including when it is painful.
