Shannon Purser has claimed that Hollywood ‘isn’t casting fat actors,’ particularly when it comes to ‘iconic characters’.

The Stranger Things star spoke out on body diversity on June 20 after photos of Emma Thompson’s ‘fat suit’ in the upcoming Matilda movie went viral.

Taking to Twitter, she wrote: “They’re not hiring fat actors for iconic fat characters because they want a big-name star.

“There are almost no fat big-name stars because fat actors aren’t allowed upward mobility.

“We aren’t allowed upward mobility because the industry sees us as two-dimensional set pieces.”

In response to Purser’s words, many took to the comments and said they had to agree.

“It makes me sad too because there are a lot of talented fat actors, and we are fine playing villains because we want diverse and complex roles on par with those who fit societal standards, as long as we stop being typecast in roles that are negative BECAUSE we are fat,” one vented.

Another added: “It would also ruin their precious beauty industry, if they place relatable women in film, they lose control. I was inspired and loved the moment I saw you on screen because I felt seen. I would love to act but I know it wouldn’t be likely because of the exact issue you stated.”

However, others said that they could list an array of actors to contradict Purser’s argument.

One pointed out: “Off the top of my head… Melissa McCarthy has successfully starred in several films.”

Directing their tweet at Purser, a second fumed: “Last I checked, no one considered you fat at all. And you’ll just ignore all the larger actors that are very successful just so you can feel ‘included’. Maybe you’re not the talent they’re looking for. You were never considered fat, but yeah sure, whatever makes you feel better.”
