A GoFundMe page has been set up for a mum-of-five who ‘faces a year in prison’ after ‘letting her 14-year-old daughter babysit her other children’.

Melissa Henderson, from the US, has reportedly been charged with criminal reckless conduct after her eldest child helped look after her other kids when their local daycare closed down during the height of the Covid pandemic.

A fundraiser has now been launched, asking for $59,000, which will apparently go towards the mum’s ‘legal defense against the criminal charges’.

So far, the GoFundMe page has accumulated just over $46,000.

The case is believed to have begun back in May 2020, when Henderson was required to go back to work.

One day, her four-year-old son reportedly ‘slipped out of the house and played with a friend,’ which her teenage daughter was believed to be unaware of.

Although the teen managed to locate her brother, the police were apparently contacted by the concerned friend’s mum.

According to Reason Magazine, Henderson was then ‘arrested in front of her kids’.

Chatting to the publication, the mum-of-five described the moment she was ‘handcuffed,’ saying: “I almost don’t have words for how low it made me feel. To truly feel in the bottom of my heart that if I’m anything, it’s a good mother and everything you do is for your kids. To be stripped of that to the point where you are handcuffed in front of them.”

It’s believed that at the time, Henderson’s ex-husband bailed her out, but the case against her continued.

Criminal proceedings are reportedly ongoing and if the mum-of-five happens to be convicted, she could apparently ‘face a maximum penalty of one year in prison,’ as well as a ‘fine of $1,000’.

Henderson’s attorney, David DeLugas, is reportedly seeking for the case to be dismissed, branding the case unconstitutional.
