Marisa Tomei has revealed she pushed for her Spider-Man: No Way Home character, Aunt May, to be a lesbian.

The 57-year-old Oscar winner said she felt she ‘should just be with a woman’ during an interview with Geeks Of Color.

She said: “There was a moment, where I felt that May – maybe she should just be with a woman because Ben is gone. And who should she be with?

“And we were kind of talking about it. And so I actually really wanted Amy Pascal from Sony to be my girlfriend!

“I was like, ‘No one even has to know, Amy. I’ll just be in a scene and you’ll be over there’. And I’ll just be like ‘Hey!’ It’ll just be a subtle thing.”

She added: “No one went for it at the time.”

Many fans praised the idea on Twitter, with one writing: “Not gonna lie, this would’ve been awesome. We were deprived of cool lesbian aunt May and that is the biggest mistake of the entire franchise right there.”

“Hot lesbian Aunt May… we could have had it all,” wrote another.

However, not everybody agreed it was a good idea.

“Hollywood brainlet Marisa Tomei wanted MCU ‘Aunt May’ to be lesbian because ‘Ben was gone anyways’. These people have no idea who these characters are. Stop giving Marvel the benefit of the doubt just because they nostalgia-baited you.”

“I’m all for representation, but stop with this tokenism. If Aunt May is a lesbian, there’s no Uncle Ben to be killed and motivate Peter Parker to become Spider-Man. Make legitimate lesbian characters that add to the story for f*** sake.”

Others pointed out how they believe that if Aunt May was gay, she should be played by an LGBT+ person.

One said: “If that’s the case then she should want the character of Aunt May to be played by a lesbian actress.

“Would she have been willing to give up her role to someone else?”
