Student Slams University Accommodation After He Arrives To Find A Stained Mattress And Iced-Up Freezer

An undergraduate has slammed the conditions of his university halls at York University, as he was greeted with a stained mattress and iced-up freezer full of out-of-date food belonging to former students of the accommodation.

Josh Dawson, from Peterborough, took to Twitter to share his disappointment at the conditions of Derwent Hall at York University after moving in last week.

The student posted images of a single blue and white striped mattress with a large brown stain on it. Alongside this finding, he also discovered that the freezer was iced-up and full of old and gone off food from previous students of the hall.

Josh said: “To be given a mattress like this in normal times would be disgusting, but in the Year of the Rona, this is just abhorrent”.

He added: “I can only assume that Uni of York don’t care about the health and safety of their students.”

The University of York student explained that he was paying £6,000 for the year at the accommodation and didn’t believe the conditions were worthy of this.

In another tweet, Josh said: “They haven’t checked the rooms for hygiene and they clearly haven’t checked the kitchens either. What the f*** are they playing at?”

Hearing of the student’s findings, the university’s Twitter page contacted Josh and referred him to the “College team” and said he should report his experience.

Josh has recently said that the university has been helpful since his complaint, yet he stressed: “This is negligence and I expect better, especially when I’m paying you £6k to live here.”

The MailOnline contacted the University of York on the situation. A spokesperson commented: “We have taken immediate action to rectify the problem and have apologised for the distress caused.

“We take cleanliness and hygiene extremely seriously in all our halls of residence and across campus and we are sorry we have not met our usual high standards on this occasion.”

Since Josh shared his findings onto Twitter, he’s received thousands of likes and many said that the university should apologise.

One person commented: “Josh…what a disgrace. As for the Uni…they should be falling over themselves to sort this out. All you hear on the radio at the moment is Uni staff harping on about how hard it all is for them….and they can’t even look after their students. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!”
