Susanna Reid has said she was left ‘heartbroken’ after seeing the Queen sitting alone at Prince Philip’s funeral, especially as pubs have been ‘exploding’ with people over the weekend.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, who is now hosting with Adil Ray following Piers Morgan’s exit, says the 94-year-old should have been allowed to have someone sit close by to her.

She argued: “Of course, one of the things we’re doing to keep us safe is restricting numbers.

“But over the weekend we saw hospitality explode for the first time since restrictions were lifted.

“Of course, this is now allowed with social distancing, and being outside is safer because the transmission risk is diluted by fresh air.

“But of course funerals are still limited to 30 people. We saw Prince Philip’s funeral over the weekend.

“Everybody’s heart broke when we saw the Queen on her own.

“Why does the Queen have to be alone and not comforted? Or at least have someone there, a metre away, to be with her?”

The Monarch said a final farewell to the Duke of Edinburgh, her husband of 74 years, inside the St George’s Chapel at Windsor on Saturday.

As the funeral was aired on TV, many viewers were left heartbroken by images of the Queen sat grieving alone.

Many took to Twitter, with one person writing: “The image of the Queen alone during the service will be the defining image of the loss of a loved one during the pandemic.

“She may have been alone but the nation was with her.”

Another added: “Oh my gosh. My heart went when the camera panned to the Queen alone with her head down. I wish I could hold her tight.”

“What a beautiful and fitting service. Heartbreaking to see the Queen alone,” a third wrote.
