The Taliban has claimed that they want to help tackle climate change, according to reports.

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a member of the Taliban’s Cultural Commission of Islamic Emirate, told Newsweek that a ‘collective’ effort needs to be made by everyone to protect the planet.

He explained: “We believe the world has a unique opportunity of rapprochement and coming together to tackle the challenges not only facing us but the entire humanity.

“These challenges ranging from world security and climate change need the collective efforts of all, and cannot be achieved if we exclude or ignore an entire people who have been devastated by imposed wars for the past four decades.”

The member of the organisation also said the Taliban wants to be ‘recognised’.

He continued: “We hope not only to be recognised by regional countries but the entire world at large as the legitimate representative government of the people of Afghanistan who have gained their right of self-determination from a foreign occupation with the backing and support of an entire nation after a prolonged struggle and immense sacrifices despite all odds being stacked against our people.”

There are currently growing concerns about the Taliban taking control of Afghanistan due to the group’s past treatment of women and minorities. However, Balkhi claimed that the organisation do not plan on threatening ‘the security of others from our soil’.

“Our policy remains that we will not allow anyone to threaten the security of others from our soil and neither will we allow others to interfere in our own internal affairs,” he stated.
