Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s daughter has responded to the backlash surrounding her chosen wrestling name.

It all started when Simone Johnson, who signed a deal with WWE back in 2020, revealed that her fighting name will be Ava Raine ahead of her debut.

After hearing the news, sports journalist Louis Dangoor took to Twitter and branded it ‘completely nonsensical’.

He said: “Giving Simeone Johnson, the daughter of ‘The Rock,’ a new name is completely nonsensical.

“Will hold judgement until she debuts, but if WWE doesn’t acknowledge her dad is ‘The Rock’ that’s ridiculous.”

In agreement, another added: “Odd choice, where does Ava Raine derive and have meaning from?”

“I hate these names yall coming up with,” pitched in a third.

A fourth joined in, writing: “Okay, this is the stupidest one I’ve ever seen. Why would you change the name of the first fourth-generation wrestler? That’s something to tout not hide.”

In response to the criticism, Johnson wrote: “I probably sound like a broken record and hopefully this is the last I’ll mention this, but I don’t understand why people being portrayed as separate individuals from their family name is such a heated topic.

“A name doesn’t discredit any prior accomplishments from any family. I could build my entire career around my father and people would still bash me anyway.”

When Dangoor saw the 20-year-old’s post he apologised, penning: “Genuinely wasn’t intended to be a knock-on, Simone, by the way, and I apologise if it was taken in a different way from the way it was intended.

“It was more about WWE changing the names of second-generation wrestlers, but as someone who isn’t a wrestler, perhaps I don’t get it.”
