Phillip Schofield was forced to apologise for ‘laughing’ at a guest’s unusual ‘fear’ on This Morning during a segment on Monday.

It all started when a caller – named  Michelle – confessed that she had a huge ‘phobia of custard’.

Each time the food item was mentioned, the woman, from Manchester, could be heard retching down the phone which caused Schofield to burst into a fit of laughter.

At one point, Michelle said: “Ooh it’s making me sweat even thinking about it.”

When Schofield eventually calmed down, he addressed the caller and said: “Listen, I am so so sorry Michelle for laughing. But that really is just an extraordinary noise.

“I feel terrible for laughing like that but that’s just such a terrible noise.”

The woman who made the call about her ‘ trauma-related’ phobia revealed that the issue started when she was in primary school.

Michelle explained: “It was from my childhood – from primary school. I was forced to eat it and it wasn’t the best of the stuff when I was younger. It was lumpy…”

She added: “I can’t even say it. It’s vile. It makes my skin crawl. It makes me retch at the thought of it, the look of it, the colour of it, the smell of it – everything.”

Fortunately for Michelle, one of the show’s regular therapists who was on hand revealed that it would be possible for her to stop ‘fearing custard’ and eventually move on with her life.

She explained: “Once the foundation is broken the whole structure of that fear falls apart.”
