Tina Brown Meghan Markle: Princess Diana's Pal Weighs In

Princess Diana’s friend, Tina Brown, has said the late royal wouldn’t have been a ‘great fan’ of Meghan Markle.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, the English journalist said that the Princess of Wales ‘would have been very, very protective’ of Prince Harry.

She told the news outlet: “I think she would have felt Meghan was steering Harry in a direction that was not good for Harry.

“I don’t think Diana would have been the great fan of Meghan that Meghan herself might perhaps imagine.”

However, Brown went on to add that Princess Diana would have been ‘thrilled’ when Prince Harry originally met Markle, commenting: “She would have been delighted, supportive and thrilled someone of mixed race was joining the royal family because Diana was so inclusive.”

She went on to say that it’ is ‘difficult’ to understand how ‘fragile’ the Duke of Sussex is following his mother’s death.

She explained: “The Spencers are a fairly turbulent family. Other members of that family, including Diana herself, have not been without their fragilities and neuroses. Harry may have inherited that Spencer turbulence.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Brown predicted how Princess Diana would have lived, and said that unlike her youngest son, she ‘understood having the power base of monarchy was enormously important’.

The interview comes as Markle has launched her Spotify podcast, in which she has discussed how she’s been treated since marrying into the royal family.

She said: “I mean, if there’s any time in my life that it’s been more focused on my race, it’s only once I started dating my husband.

“Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a Black woman, because up until then I had been treated like a mixed woman, and things really shifted.”
